Strike Action at London Underground
The London Underground has been hit by a fresh strike held by thousands of workers due to disputes over planned job cuts.
Millions of commuters faced difficulty in travelling to work this morning as thousands of tube workers take part in the 24 hour strike, opposing plans to axe 800 jobs, with claims that this could rise to almost 2,000.
Transport for London (TFL), who run the tube network, have listed 80 tube stations which will be closed throughout the day, as well as Fulham Broadway station which is used by thousands of Chelsea football fans, inevitably causing issues for supporters attending the Chelsea versus Spartak Moscow Champions League match tonight.
Even so, TFL, are insisting that London is not facing travel issues and that about 40 per cent of tube trains are operating as normal, as well as the Docklands Light Railway which serves the financial district of East London.
The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT), on the other hand, claims that every line on the system is either suspended, part suspended or running ghost trains through closed stations to attempt to support the tubes as the strike remains “rock solid”.
This is to date the third walk out from tube staff since September. The network carries roughly 3 million passengers daily, meaning that the stoppages are costing the capital up to £50 million per day.
