Security Breach At London Heathrow

Thursday, 13 March 2008

heathrow flightsBAA have confirmed that passengers should contact airlines to check whether their flights have been delayed or cancelled following what is being described as a major security alert at London Heathrow.

Earlier today, a man with a rucksack on his back ran into the path of an aircraft after first scaling the perimeter fence. The incident happened on Heathrow's north runway just after 1400.

An estimated 20 emergency services vehicles arrived at the scene whilst sniffer dogs were used to check the man’s rucksack. Nobody has been hurt in the incident, although the man has been taken into custody, a Metropolitan police spokeswoman confirmed:

"A man was arrested and is currently in custody. A bag has been recovered."

The north runway at Heathrow has now been closed and passengers are advised to check with their airlines before arriving at the airport. The incident comes one day before the Queen was due to open the new Terminal 5 building.
