Ryanair Ad Banned After Receiving a Single Complaint

Thursday, 27 January 2011
Ryan have landed themselves in hot water again this week after the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) banned a Ryanair press advert promoting flights to Billund in Denmark.

The advert, aimed at promoting family flights to Billund, showed a photo of a child in a forest advertising flights from £9 between November and January. The advert was also intended to endorse the Billund Legoland resort as a family holidays destination.

A single complaint was lodged regarding the advert with the ASA, pointing out that Legoland Billund has only partial access in November and December, and is closed by January. The ASA upheld the complaint on the grounds that the advert was misleading.

Ryanair has agreed that the complainant was correct with regards to the opening times of the resort, but stated that the text on the advert was supplied by Visit Denmark, which OK’d the text prior to the flight dates being added.

The flight operator has been banned by the ASA from publishing the advert again as it currently stands.

Ryanair has recently revealed that it will be operating flights to four new routes from Manchester Airport this summer. Alicante, Faro, Madrid and Tenerife will all be accessible from Manchester with Ryanair soon, and flights from Manchester to Dublin have been increased from 4 to 6 a day.

On top of this, the company will commence a twice-weekly service to Alicante from Humberside Airport in April.
