St Georges Bay Things To Do
Beaches
Wander down to the shore and St Georges Bay has something for everyone. Although most of the Maltese coastline is rocky, St Georges Bay provides a sandy inlet from which you can sunbathe. For the more adventurous, a host of water sports are catered for including windsurfing, scuba-diving, sailing, snorkelling and swimming. Nearby, two summer lidos are provided for small fees which provide sandy coves and additional water sports.
Nightlife
If you are after a meal and drinks overlooking the sea, then the tranquillity of St Georges Bay is for you. Retaining an old charm, it along with the nearby Balluta Bay and Spinola Bay, offers a relaxing coastline retreat dotted with converted bars and restaurants that were formerly dwellings by the sea. For something a little more upbeat, Paceville is only a short walk away. Known as the nightlife capital of Malta, you can boogie away the night amidst the piano bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. If none of these will do, St Georges Bay boasts a casino, cinema theatre and tenpin bowling centre nearby.
Shopping
For those looking for some retail therapy in St Georges Bay will find themselves in luck with Bay Street, a modern shopping centre. However, a far wider selection of retailers lay in Valletta, the Maltese capital. Only a 10 minute ferry ride from nearby Silema, you can soon be in the heart of the island. Republic Street and St Paul’s Street provide a good variety of shops, especially independents selling locally produced goods. For those with a keen eye for a bargain, the open air market held daily on Merchants Street and on Sundays outside the city walls provides the perfect opportunity to find one.
Valletta
Aside from shopping, any trip to Valletta will be rich in culture and history. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Valletta is characterised with outstanding Baroque architecture throughout its churches, palaces, museums and theatres. Of particular interest to any visitor should be the breathtaking St John’s Co-Cathedral and the splendid Grand Harbour.
