Salina Things To Do
Beaches and water sports
Although the most rugged area of Malta, Salina offers superb views across the sea, the water is clear and warm and it is possible to swim from the rocks. Nearby Bugibba, with its beach lidos, Qawra and St Paul’s Bay offer all kinds of water sports and the island’s largest sandy beach is just along the road at Mellieha.
Diving
The island has some of the clearest, warmest water in the Med and fantastic opportunities for cave and wreck diving. It’s a year-round dive location with facilities and courses for beginners and experienced divers with Salina being an excellent base. The sea around nearby Qawra Point features plentiful sealife, caves, walls and a wonderful reef. Of course, the island’s size means that anywhere is within easy reach.
Mdina
The Silent City, Malta’s old walled capital is just 6 miles away. Cars are limited making it easy to explore the narrow medieval streets and enjoy the views across the island. The Medina Experience gives an audio-visual account of the city’s 3,000 year history.
Valletta
Valletta is Malta’s capital and a World Heritage site. The Fortress City’s imposing Cathedral, its churches, fortresses, palaces and timber-balconied houses take the visitor back through 400 years of history. Valetta rises steeply above two harbours –the Grand Harbour in particular provides stunning views - and walking through its narrow streets will reveal statues, fountains, magnificent gardens and plenty of interesting bars and restaurants.
Archaeological sites
The island is rich in archaeological interest. Salina has catacombs carved out of the rock which date back to the 2nd Century BC, while further south lies the impressive necropolis, the Hypogeum, listed as a World Heritage Centre.
Gozo and Comino
The islands of Gozo and Comino are just a short boat trip away. Tiny Comino offers peace, relaxation and the stunning Blue Lagoon, while Gozo has an impressive capital, Victoria, the Ggantija temples, which are amongst the world’s oldest man-made structures, and some stunning scenery. Boats also take visitors out to St Paul’s Islands, which sit at the entrance to the Bay, where St Paul is said to have been shipwrecked.
Nightlife
Although Salina is a quiet resort anyone looking for nightlife doesn’t need to travel far. Nearby Bugibba has it all: there are discos, clubs, karaoke bars and a wide variety of restaurants and bars. Anyone feeling lucky could try the Oracle Casino.
