Qawra Holidays – Enjoy the best of both worlds, on Malta’s north shores

Qawra, along with its livelier neighbour, Bugibba, is one of the most established tourist destinations on Malta, and offers a relaxed modern resort, within walking distance of the action next door. Located along the northern rocky shoreline, Qawra is home to a narrow shingle beach, with a series of modern hotels and apartments, many with beachfront access. Snorkelling and scuba-diving are popular activities, and the whole of the bay is good for swimming and water sports. The nearest sandy beach, Mellieha Bay, is just 8km away, and an easy day trip from the resort.

Package holidays to Qawra are a good choice for families or couples, looking for a developed resort with a laid-back atmosphere, and plenty of action and entertainment on your doorstep. The resort is quieter than the bustling Bugibba, but the two resorts are linked by a long promenade, full of shops, bars and restaurants, so you’ll have easy access to the lively nightlife scene, should you choose.

When to go

Malta’s tourist season runs from April to October, with July and August being the busiest time, seeing both high demand and the most expensive prices. The months of June and September see ideal beach weather with more comfortable conditions, and there’s usually better availability during these weeks. Spring and autumn can be a good time to visit, thanks to cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and lower prices, with the resort also a popular winter sun destination, boasting mild weather and plenty of sunshine.

The best beaches in Qawra

Qawra is located on Malta’s rugged coastline, which is known for its scenic coves and rocky inlets, and provides a relaxed base for sunbathing, and excellent conditions for water sports and snorkelling. Family-friendly beaches are close by, too, and are popular spots for a classic day out by the sea in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine. Here are our picks for the best three beaches in the area

Best beach for sunbathing – Mellieha Bay

Mellieha Bay, one of the only sandy beaches on the island, lies 8km north of Qawra, and is accessible by bus from the resort. The longest on Malta, the golden beach is a favourite with families, thanks to the soft sand and shallow waters.

Best beach for activities – Bugibba/Qawra

Qawra sits on a lively stretch, and for a change from sunbathing on the lidos, platforms or shingle beach, why not indulge in some energetic water sports? There’s plenty of choice here, from jet skiing and banana boat rides, to snorkelling and scuba diving, and the lively promenade behind the shoreline buzzes with convenient shops, bars and restaurants.

Best beach for isolation – Selmun Bay

Slow down the pace with a day trip to Selmun Bay, a wild and natural beach in the far north eastern corner of the island, past Mellieha. Although hard to find, thanks to its remote location, this stunning spot is brimming with natural charm and beauty, and a perfect place for some secluded sunbathing.
