Holidays in Malta – sun, sea and scintillating sites
Malta Holidays have everything. Sun for some 300 days of the year, crystal clear blue waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling and friendly people almost all of whom speak English. This little island nation, smaller than the Isle of Wight, is packed with fascinating historical sites, from the world’s oldest temples to the charming little capital, Valletta, built by the ‘Knights of Malta’. The Maltese love their food too, so eating out is a pleasure. It’s no wonder so many Brits choose a Malta holiday each year.
When to go to Malta
Malta is a year-round destination. Only the tiny island of Comino closes for the winter. The best time to go depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. Summer is best for swimming and sunbathing. If you aren’t intent on a scorcher, spring and autumn are lovely times for a Malta holiday, less expensive, less busy, still warm but much more comfortable for walking and sightseeing. Winter is least crowded and cheapest (except over Christmas and New Year) and can still be pleasantly warm and sunny with plenty to see and do.
The weather in Malta
Summers are dry and hot with temperatures topping 30ºC in July and August, though often with a pleasing light breeze along the coast. Spring and autumn are also warm, frequently reaching well into the twenties from early May and throughout October when sea temperatures also remain very comfortable for swimming. Even January is rarely cold and has an average five hours a day of sunshine.
Getting the best deal to Malta
Holidays in Malta are dramatically cheaper in winter than summer and there are some great deals in spring and autumn too. If you are not tied to school holidays, June is usually hot and sunny and much cheaper than July. September is still peak for many Malta hotels (because Maltese schools go back later than British ones) but October can be an excellent time for a Malta holiday-on-a-budget. Airport and transfer need to know
Malta is just three hours flying time from the UK and there are flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Leeds-Bradford, Edinburgh and East Midlands Airport. All fly into Malta International Airport which is rarely more than an hour’s drive from anywhere on the main island. The airport is modern and generally efficient.
Taxis are readily available and fares from the airport are regulated so check here for what you should be paying and confirm it with the driver before you travel. Malta has plenty of buses including express buses from the airport to resorts including St Julian’s, Mellieha and Bugibba, as well as to the capital Valletta from where you can get buses to almost anywhere on the island. A two-hour ticket costs €2.20 (about £1.80). You can also hire a car, of course. Malta drives on the left like the UK but the driving is much more erratic.
