Sicily Things to do
Experience Some of the Finest Greek Temples
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and offers a vast array of things to do.
The island boasts some of the top ancient sites in the world including Greek temple ruins that in many cases surpass the quality of those remaining in Greece. At Syracusa on the east coast are the remains of a once mighty Hellenistic city and rival to Athens. Ancient Syracuse, as it was known, played a key role in Greek mythology, and for this reason is home to many impressive ancient ruins that date as far back as the 6th century BC. Don’t miss the Temple of Apollo and a Doric temple, which is the oldest of its kind.
Develop a Nose for Wine
Your trip to Sicily could include a visit to a local vineyard or a full wine-tasting course, to appreciate the region’s local wines. The flagship red grape in Sicily is Nero d´Avola, producing an exotic, spicy wine, while other red grapes used extensively include Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Perricone. Inzolia is considered to be the best local white varietal. Leading wine towns in Sicily include Marsala, Messina, Noto and Ragusa.
Climb Mount Etna
Sicily has miles of gorgeous Mediterranean coastline, and mighty Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, dominates the dramatic east coast. Climbing it is a popular thing to do for those feeling energetic, although climbs must be guided. You can even do an atmospheric night climb beyond the lava dunes and eerie moonscape of the lower slopes. Walking the Circumetnea Railroad which circles the volcano is another option.
Explore the Medieval Gem of Old Palerma
Palermo on Sicily’s northern coast is Sicily’s capital and within the modern metropolis lies its ancient quarter, boasting exquisite medieval buildings, Baroque churches, famous monuments and shady squares. A great thing to do is spend a few hours exploring on foot, stopping for lunch, shopping in the bustling markets and experiencing the daily life of local Sicilians.
Catch a Film at Taormina’s Greek Theatre
Sicily’s best-loved resort of Taormina has welcomed visitors for centuries. It’s a picturesque town, with a castle, great restaurants and bougainvillea-draped piazzas, offering breathtaking views of southern Calabria and white-tipped Etna to the west. It’s ancient Teatro Greco, largely rebuilt by the Romans, hosts film, theatre and music events during July and August.
Dance in the Moonlight at Giardini Naxos
For visitors to Sicily looking for things to do in the evenings, there are great nights out to be had at the lively family seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Here, overlooked by Mount Etna, the resort has many open-air bars, late night discos and a great party atmosphere.
