Taormina Things To Do
Beaches
The exclusive town of Taormina is situated on fantastic eastern coastline of Sicily, looking out across the sparkling Ionian sea. There are many beaches nearby, including the pebbly Mazzarò beach that is reached by cable car and the Giardini-Naxos to the south - a long sandy beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Isola Bella is also just off the coast of Taormina, a tiny popular island that is protected as a nature reserve and has a small rocky beach.
Family Activities
Taormina has opportunities for wind-surfing, sailing, fishing, scuba-diving, canoeing and snorkelling. With the glorious weather, blue waters and stunning coastline, children and adults can fully enjoy the range of activities on offer here. Children will also love exploring the many caves and grottos on the beaches.
Golf
To play on the nearest golf course it's a 30 minute relaxed drive away. It's worth making the effort to travel here as golf played on top of Mount Etna with views of Mediterranean Sea is an experience to remember for a long time!
Restaurants
Restaurants in Taormina are excellent and generally in the higher price range like the rest of this exclusive region. Expect a wide range of fresh seafood and fish from the ocean. Try the simple and delicious pasta dishes with delicates sauces made from tomatoes, capers, basil and anchovies. Also try the local white almond wine, served chilled with desserts.
History
Situated 300m above sea level, facing Mount Etna, and crowned by a Saracen castle, Taormina is a beautiful and historic town. The Ancient Greco Roman theatre with the views of the coast is often used for filming for classical and pop concerts. The Taormina film festival is also held here.
Excursions
Taormina is also situated between two beautiful towns in Sicily, the second largest city on the island, Catania and the pretty town of Messina. Both of these towns have popular markets and lots of historic monuments to explore. You can also visit the lava slopes of the nearby volcanic, yet stable, Mount Etna.
