History
The city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and history buffs have plenty to keep them busy in this ancient resort. Sights include those on the island of Ortygia (the Old City) such as the Fountain of Arethusa, the Temple of Apollo and the stunning Plaza Duomo, whilst the mainland is home to attractions such as the Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and the Paolo Orsi Musuem.
 
Walking Tours
The historic and compact centre of Ortygia is ideal for exploring on foot, and the many popular attractions here can be easily viewed. With its narrow cobbled streets and alleyways, and lively squares and piazzas lined with colourful bars and cafes, the old town holds a special charm and character.
 
Sports
Swimming, tennis and golf can all be enjoyed in Siracusa, with mountain biking and horse riding an excellent way to get out and explore the town and the surrounding areas.
 
Boat Trips
There are many boat trips to take from the town, especially around Ortygia Island and along the southeast coast of Sicily, with the harbour a major base for sailing trips.
 
Beaches
The coastline boasts both sandy beaches and rocky coves, and offers plenty of stretches for quiet sunbathing after all the extensive sightseeing. Fishing, surfing and scuba-diving can all be enjoyed on the beaches.
 
Shopping
Siracusa is home to charming shops, boutiques and workshops, selling the local speciality, papyrus paper, as well as hand-made ceramics and pottery, gold and regional foodstuffs, such as wines and the special local 'fish preserves'.
 
Food & Drink
The town is home to a great selection of restaurants, with dishes served here using plenty of fresh fish such as tuna and grouper, and featuring regional produce including pine nuts, olives, cherry tomatoes, honey, almonds and ricotta. The area's local wine - Nero d'Avero - is served throughout the towns' bars and restaurants.
 
Day Trips
Day trips and excursions include the nature reserve of Vendicari, the Baroque town of Noto, the quaint hilltop town of Ragusa and the fantastic beaches at Arenella and Fontane Bianche. Livelier cities on Sicily such as Taormina and Catania are within reach for a change of scene.
