Vitorchiano Things To Do
Archaeology
Ancient history buffs will definitely want to explore the vast archaeological area just outside the walls which feature a dizzying array of historical findings dating back several millennia. In a single visit you can discover ancient cave dwellings at Corvina, Roman tombs and Etruscan ruins in Montecastelli and the ruined medieval San Nicolao monastery. Overgrown and unpreserved, it offers a magical example of real untouched history and seclusion just minutes from the town.
Museums
Vitorchiano itself and especially at nearby Viterbo offers a colourful insight into Tuscia region's long and varied history with many excellent museums to visit. There is everything from fine art, religious manuscripts, tapestries, ceramics and Etruscan artefacts to admire, with many housed in historically important houses and palaces. It should provide an inspiring and fascinating introduction to local culture and heritage.
Lakes
Within easy reach of Vitorchiano are two of the most impressive inland lakes in Italy that make for a highly rewarding day trip for nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts and hikers. The volcanic crater lake of Bolsena is a spectacular sight and is surrounded by lovely woodland paths offering an abundance of flora and fauna. Lake Vico also has a very extensive network of trails through forests covered with porcini mushrooms and chestnuts.
The Medieval Old Town
The town of Vitorchiano offers both magical medieval history and a most dramatic location surrounded by fortified 14th century walls sitting precariously upon a steep cliff face. Discover towering church spires and ancient merchant houses carved out of solid rock. Relatively untouched, it features winding, undulating alleyways filled with traditional cafes and quaint speciality shops. Extremely compact and inviting, Vitorchiano holidays are blissfully relaxing and full of enchanting history.
Spas
Nearby Viterbo is renowned for its thermal baths which have been enjoyed since Roman times. The town has several public facilities and upmarket spa hotels offering a range of revitalising treatments. A soak in sulphuric thermal waters and some well deserved pampering is the perfect antidote to a busy day of sightseeing and is one of the town's most popular attractions.
Festivals and Celebrations
The towns and villages of the Tuscia countryside offer visitors an eye catching glimpse of rural life during its many fascinating annual festivals. Vitorchiano comes alive during the festival of San Michele with processions, food and music and in Vetrella the famous tree wedding festivities, which date back to pagan times is an utterly unique occasion. Definitely not to be missed is the Ronciglioni Carnival along the shores of Lake Vico which is regarded as the most colourful rural celebration in central Italy.
