Weather in Lake Maggiore - Mild climate in Italy's most westerly lake
The picturesque Lake Maggiore is located at the foot of the Italian Alps, just 24km from Milan airport in northern Italy. Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of all the Italian lakes, with the northern part of the lake actually situated in Locarno in Switzerland. Visitors to the area can take advantage of the lake's year-round mild climate, and enjoy the unique combination of Alpine character and almost subtropical Mediterranean landscapes, full of lush vegetation.
Weather in Lake Maggiore - Spring and summer sees great conditions for outdoor activities
Spring is a popular time to visit Lake Maggiore, before the crowds arrive, with most visitors keen to explore the scenic area and enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming, boating and hiking. April sees highs of 18C, rising to 23C in May, with these spring days being quite changeable, when around 80mm - 100mm of rain falls each month. Summers are the busiest time in Lake Maggiore and the temperatures start to rise, with June and July experiencing highs of 27C - 29C, and the sun shining for up to 9 hours a day. The weather is more humid during the summer months, and the region can see regular thunderstorms, due to the high pressure of hot air from the south meeting the cold mountain air.

Autumn sees the temperatures drop to 18C and increased rainfall, with October, the wettest month of the year, receiving up to 120mm. Winter is low-season in Lake Maggiore, when the weather is much cooler, with January seeing the coldest weather of the year, with average highs of 5C. Lake Maggiore is affected by winds that sweep through the area - the northern 'tramontana' winds that blow throughout the night, and the 'inverna' which can be felt during the daytime.
