Lake Maggiore Things To Do

Most visitors take to the water at the lake, which is the most popular way of exploring the region, whether it is on a ferry, catamaran or private sailboat. This is an excellent way to soak up the dazzling scenery and take in the unforgettable lake views.

 

For those not content to simply relax and enjoy a leisurely swim, water sports to indulge in at Lake Maggiore include windsurfing, kite surfing, water-skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and even scuba-diving.

 

Tennis, mountain biking, horse riding and hang gliding are all available, and there is an 18-hole golf course at the lake, which sits at an altitude of 500m and offers golfers a gorgeous setting with stunning views.     

 

The forests that lie behind the lake are ideal for avid walkers and hikers, with some of the most scenic walks and trails accessed by cable-car.

 

Cycling is a popular activity here, with riders able to take in the beauty of the region by following the marked paths that run around the lake, or joining guided tours through the local towns.

 

Stresa is home to a waterfront promenade and boasts a charming atmosphere in its lively squares, grand hotels and palm trees. The principal tourist area of the entire lake, Stresa is the main transportation hub where the ferries and cable-car depart from.

 

There are regular ferries departing for these famous isles - made up of Isola Bella, Superiore and Madre - which sit off the waters of Stresa, and offer guided tours of their romantic palazzos and elegant gardens. The huge 'Orto Botanico' on the peaceful Isola Madre boasts a wealth of exotic birds such as peacocks and fowl amongst the lush botanical gardens, whilst Isola Bella is home to a beautiful Baroque palace and lovely gardens.

 

Take a trip on the Lado Maggiore Express train, which travels between Stresa and Locarno, or head to Milan by train. The Locarno Film Festival is held every August, whilst the Ascona Jazz Festival takes place at the end of June.
