Lake Maggiore Holidays - Fantastic scenery and amazing views

Lake Maggiore is rich in stunning scenery and breathtaking views, boasting grand villas and colourful gardens, together with an age-old air of elegance and charm. Just 24km from Milan Malpensa airport, it is the most westerly of the major Italian Lakes, and lies at the foot of the Italian Alps close to the border of Switzerland. The location offers a unique combination of Alpine scenery and Mediterranean climate and culture.

Holidays in Lake Maggiore would suit those looking to soak up the Italian culture, in a refined setting amongst the enchanting scenery of Northern Italy. Home to numerous hiking and rambling trails, the area is ideal for walkers keen to explore the mountains and the shores of the lakes, and there are water-based activities such as sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and water-skiing. Lake Maggiore attracts culture lovers throughout the summer months when the region plays host to a number of festivals and classical music concerts. Excursions available include trips to the other great Italian lakes - Lake Como and Lake Garda.

Airport and transport need to know

Lake Maggiore is reached by flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh to Milan Malpensa airport (MXP). From here the transfer coach will typically take a little over one hour to cover the 50km journey.

Abundant local transport options include ferries between the various resort and the islands on the lake, many buses, the railway service from Milan (1hour) and a cable car.

The stylish resort of Stresa lies on the western shore of the lake and affords stunning panoramic views of the Borromean Islands. Throughout the high season from April to September Stresa becomes one of the most vibrant and beautiful resorts on the Italian lakes. The palm-lined esplanades and warm climate draws back holiday makers year after year who come to sample Italian lakeside living at its best. The accommodation, nightlife, activities and excursions are second to none, and if you are looking for romantic atmosphere in a stunning setting then Stresa will be hard to beat.

You will never be at a loss for activities. Take your pick from boat trips to the idyllic Borromean Islands or a cable car ride up Monte Mottarone with its stunning views. Excursions can include a trip to nearby sophisticated Milan, wine tasting in the Stresa hills, and trips to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. There are also numerous trips to the nearby lakes of Como and Lugana.   A visit to the Botanical Gardens at Villa Taranto with over 50 acres of exotic plants, terrace gardens, waterfalls and pools should also not be missed.

Baveno, also on the western shore of the lake, overlooks Borromean Bay. It offers a down-to-earth charm with a picturesque promenade and plenty of colourful shops, cafes and bars along the lakeside promenade, and is ideally placed for visiting other areas of Lake Maggiore.
