When to go to Lake Maggiore
The holiday season in Lake Maggiore starts around Easter time and continues through till September. August is the busiest month, as it is very popular with many European visitors. The best time for weather is mid-June through to July, when you can expect temperatures of around 24-27C and 7-8 hours a day of sunshine. Some rainfall is common throughout the year, with some thunderstorms in the summer.

Lake Maggiore has a typical temperate climate, with distinct seasons, but there is more rainfall during the warmer summer months – around 90mm during July. Average temperatures range from 6C in January through to 27C in July, with September still comfortably warm at 23C.
Airport and transport need to know
Lake Maggiore is reached by flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh to Milan Malpensa airport (MXP). From here the transfer coach will typically take a little over one hour to cover the 50km journey.
Abundant local transport options include ferries between the various resort and the islands on the lake, many buses, the railway service from Milan (1hour) and a cable car.
The stylish resort of Stresa lies on the western shore of the lake and affords stunning panoramic views of the Borromean Islands. Throughout the high season from April to September Stresa becomes one of the most vibrant and beautiful resorts on the Italian lakes. The palm-lined esplanades and warm climate draws back holiday makers year after year who come to sample Italian lakeside living at its best. The accommodation, nightlife, activities and excursions are second to none, and if you are looking for romantic atmosphere in a stunning setting then Stresa will be hard to beat.
You will never be at a loss for activities. Take your pick from boat trips to the idyllic Borromean Islands or a cable car ride up Monte Mottarone with its stunning views. Excursions can include a trip to nearby sophisticated Milan, wine tasting in the Stresa hills, and trips to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. There are also numerous trips to the nearby lakes of Como and Lugana. A visit to the Botanical Gardens at Villa Taranto with over 50 acres of exotic plants, terrace gardens, waterfalls and pools should also not be missed.
Baveno, also on the western shore of the lake, overlooks Borromean Bay. It offers a down-to-earth charm with a picturesque promenade and plenty of colourful shops, cafes and bars along the lakeside promenade, and is ideally placed for visiting other areas of Lake Maggiore.
