Sorrento Things To Do
The Town
With its medieval centre and charming cobbled streets, Sorrento is ideal for exploring on foot, and the hillside location offers some spectacular views out across the bay and of Mount Vesuvius. The town boasts traditional streets lined with lemon trees, and tiny hidden lanes and passageways to discover, as well as a vibrant city scene. Sorrento's main square is lined with bars and cafes - a great place in which to relax and plan the day's itinerary, whilst experiencing a slice of Italian life.
The Local Area
Sorrento lies in a perfect location to explore the Campania region. The fishing port of Positano is a true favourite, thanks to its quaint yet exclusive atmosphere and beautifully coloured houses clinging to the cliffs, whilst the medieval Amalfi with its cathedral and Ravello, home to famous gardens, are both highly recommended. Or try a train ride into Naples, where the bustling city streets boast fabulous architecture, museums and some first-class restaurants.
Boat Trips
The Bay of Naples is always busy with numerous boats, ferries and hydrofoils, all offering an excellent way to see the area. Sail out to the glamorous island of Capri, and visit the Emerald Grotto or one of the chic cafes, head out to Ischia, home to thermal hot springs and some fantastic spa centres, or cruise around the mythical Isles of the Sirens.
Amalfi Drive
The spectacular and hair-raising world-famous drive along the coast from Sorrento to Amalfi is not to be missed. From the azure blue of the Mediterranean and the picturesque villages tumbling into the sea, to the crazy twists and turns of the coastline and breathtaking views, the Amalfi Drive proves highly memorable.
Pompeii
The ancient site of Pompeii and Herculaneum is a major tourist attraction, and gives a fascinating insight into Roman life, thanks to the amazingly well-preserved collection of villas, shops and forum. Guided tours are available.
Shopping
Sorrento is a lively and bustling centre, with a fantastic array of shops. It's a great town for browsing and buying, with plenty of designer boutiques, as well as gift and souvenir shops, and an excellent selection of gourmet food stores. Good mementos include glass wear, hand-embroidered linens and locally-made marquetry products.
