Maiori Things To Do
Maiori Beach
Maiori is probably the best beach on the Amalfi Coast. It’s perfect for families, romantics and water sports enthusiasts, with its dark sand gently sloping into the sparkling Mediterranean, backed by a palm tree-lined promenade with shops and restaurants and sheltered by the Lattari
Mountains. Go on holiday to Maiori to relax and chill out in the sun.
The Amalfi Coast
The coast road takes in some truly breathtaking scenery, but this 25-mile long UNESCO World Heritage site is just too good to spoil by driving. Local buses are excellent and offer a chance to take in the views, and take photos, without worrying about traffic, the winding road and the sheer 500-foot drops down to the azure sea.
Sightseeing
Despite much of Maiori having been rebuilt after flooding in 1954, there are still lots of character and reminders of its history. The Collegiate of St Maria a Mare, the 12th century domed church, dominates the historic centre and the castle of San Nicola looks out over the sparkling Med. Neighbouring Minori also has plenty of charm and the towns along the coast are stunning, including Positano, famed for its picture postcard beauty and unique fashions; ancient Amalfi itself; Ravello, with its spectacular views; and the small but cosmopolitan city of Salerno, home to the world’s first medical school.
Hiking & Mountain Trails
Whether hiking or just taking a stroll along the pathways and enjoying the fresh lemon-scented air, walking is the perfect way to view this coast. In the heat of summer, the Monti Lattari offer a chance to escape the crowds, while spring and autumn are perfect for a longer hike. Mountain trails are marked and walks include the aptly named Path of the Gods.
Eating & Drinking
Maiori’s seafront is lined with pizzerias, ice cream parlours, bars and restaurants. Food, especially the local seafood is, as you would expect, excellent, but what you might not be prepared for is an ingredient of the cake speciality, which is made from eggs, fruit, nuts, cocoa and aubergines. Wines are good and there’s a local liqueur, Limoncello, which, not surprisingly, is made from lemons and makes for an excellent souvenir of this lemon-scented town.
Capri and other Boat Trips
Called the world’s most beautiful island, visitors can decide whether this is true or not by taking the ferry from Sorrento. The Blue Grotto is certainly stunning and the chair lift and funicular provide spectacular views. Boats also leave for other grottoes along the coast, but with views this spectacular there doesn’t have to be a destination. A tour along the Amalfi coast is something never to be forgotten.
Vesuvius, Pompeii & Herculaneum
Less than 20 miles away is the world’s best known volcano and the twin cities which it buried under volcanic ash in AD 79. Bustling Naples lies just beyond.
Festivals
As well as the Rossellini Film Festival, Jazz on the Coast and the Festival of Santa Maria Assunta, the town’s patron saint, there’s a celebration of the aubergine. There’s also an acclaimed Summer Music Festival at neighbouring Minori.
