Weather in Colombo - Tropical climate on Sri Lanka's west coast
Colombo is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, and enjoys a hot tropical climate with high levels of humidity. The temperature does not fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, however the level of rainfall dramatically increases during the wet monsoon season, which runs from May to August, with Colombo's west coast location meaning it sees more rain than other areas in Sri Lanka.
Colombo Weather - Visit during the hot dry winters
The best time for a holiday to Columbo is from December to March, when the region enjoys dry hot weather during our British winter, thanks to the northeast monsoon which runs from December to April. Temperatures hover around 30C - 31C and the area sees between 8 - 9 hours of sun each day. The sea temperature is a very pleasant 28C, and humidity is high but not unbearable. The period from March to May experiences the highest levels of humidity, when temperatures rise, reaching highs of 32C, and there is a dramatic increase in rainfall. May is one of the wettest months in Colombo, receiving 382mm, and also sees the sunshine hours decrease to 6 each day.
Weather in Colombo - Summer monsoon from May to August
Summers experience average highs of 30C and a constant 6 hours of sun each day, with the southwest monsoon bringing a monthly rainfall level between 115mm - 180mm. Rainfall increases further in September, rising to 236mm, with October and November seeing particularly wet weather - 371mm and 306mm of rain respectively.
