Kala Nera Things to do
Village
Kala Nera is widely seen as the most beautiful and unspoilt village on the Pelion peninsula. Holidays in Kala Nera revolve around the beautiful Blue Flag beach, from which swimming is a pleasure. It's also a good central place from which to discover other parts of Pelion. A fishing village in the shadow of Mount Pelion, Kala Nera is just 20 kilometres from Volos. In Kala Nera, you'll find a variety of hotels, restaurants, tavernas, bars, cafes and commercial shops. You can also rent cars, scooters and bikes, or take buses to and from Volos.
Steam Trains
Venture out to the nearby village of Ano Lehonia on your Kala Nera holiday and take a trip on the Moutzouris-Smudgy. This is a celebrated Pelion steam-train ride that offers a stunning journey over ravines and bridges, all with a mountainous backdrop. This is one trip you won't want to miss.
Festivals
A big feature of any Kala Nera holiday should be festivals and, during the summer, Kala Nera is home to several. Everyone's invited, and the highlight of the season is on the 15th August, a national holiday devoted to the Virgin Mary. In her honour, the festival of Panagia (The Holy Mother) is held. Join in the celebrations, with wine and song.
Activities
If you can be lured away from swimming off the beautiful beaches on your family holiday in Kala Nera, you can take a cruise to the North Sporades islands or to other areas of the Pagassitikos Gulf. Take an organised tour around Mount Pelion. Rent a bike and explore the coast and mountains. Trek along traditional pathways to local villages like Pinakates or Vyzitsa. Enjoy horse-riding from the riding centre at Koropi.
Cuisine
Your Kala Nera holiday puts you in the home of some of the best cuisine in the region, with freshly prepared meat and fish and the finest local ingredients. You'll find a healthy selection of tavernas and cafe bars in Kala Nera, with the enticing option to eat meat cooked straight from the spit while sitting right on the water's edge.
