Pyrgos Things To Do

Village life
This well-preserved hilltop town presents an idyllic slice of traditional Greek village life, thanks to its narrow cobbled lanes, whitewashed buildings and Venetian castle. A great place to relax and enjoy the slow pace of life in the town's streets and village squares of unspoilt charm.

Churches
There are numerous characteristic blue-domed churches to tour, including Agia Triada, Agios Nikloaos and the Church of Theotokaki, home to lovely frescos, with the famous Monastery of Prophitis Ilias just 4km away, at the top of the mountain.

Walking and hiking
The mountainous terrain around the village is covered with vineyards, and offers great walking and hiking trips, with visitors treated to some fantastic views from Pyrgos, the highest village on Santorini, and its surrounding areas.

Beaches
Local beaches to visit feature some of the best on the island, and feature Perissa and Kameri on the east coast, with their black volcanic sands.

Dining
Pyrgos has a good choice of restaurants and tavernas serving up Greek specialities, including fish, seafood, grilled meats and regional produce, with plenty of the island's famous wine available.

Day trips
Head to the capital, Fira, for some great shopping and upmarket dining, or enjoy a scenic boat trip from Santorini port. Other regions to visit include the charming towns of Oia or Imerovigli, and popular attractions to see are the Minoan settlement at Akotiri, and the ancient site at Thera.
