Imerovigli Things To Do
Skaros
Below the town of Imerovigli sit the remains of Skaros castle, built in 1207. Skaros castle was destroyed by an earthquake in the early 1800’s but the ruins are still an impressive site where a path leading to the top of Skaros Hill gives beautiful views West across the Aegean Sea and inland across all Santorini.
Sunset
Santorini and the Greek islands are well known for their stunning sunsets but it is Imerovigli that triumphs as the “balcony to the Aegean”. Sitting high upon a volcanic caldera, the view from Imerovigli as the sun sets is simply breath-taking. As the sun disappears into the Aegean Sea, the lights of Imerovigli begin to sparkle creating a beautiful twilight that makes Imerovigli one of the top sunset viewpoints in the world.
Churches
Santorini is well blessed with over 250 churches and the Church of Ai-Stratis in Imerovigli built in the appealingly quaint Cycladic style is one the most beautiful. Imerovigli is also home to the Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti located within Skaros, and the Monastery of Saint Nikolaos is only a short journey away on the road to Fira.
Beaches
Sitting 1000 feet atop a volcanic cliff, Imerovigli is not served by beaches but it is only a short trip across to the Eastern side of the island where beautiful beaches await.
Dining and Nightlife
Dining in Imerovigli is a traditional affair where delightful tavernas are scattered through the criss-crossing streets, serving delicious dishes which can be washed down with one of Santorini’s own locally produced wines. The nightlife is Imerovigli is calm and relaxed with neighbouring Fira providing livelier entertainment.
Daytrips
From Fira, boat tours to the neighbouring Nea Kameni volcano include knowledgeable local guides, a hike up the volcano and a visit to the hot springs. Fira is also home to an Austrian built cable car leading down to the Port of Skala, and Oia, Monolithos and Kamari are all easily accessible by local bus.
