Fira Things To Do
Fira Town
Precariously sitting atop a 400m volcanic cliff, Fira boasts glorious panoramic views and as capital of Santorini is host to an excellent range of shops, bars, restaurants and tavernas. The winding cobbled streets are home to boutique jewellery shops where bargains are to be had, as well as refreshingly cool bars and restaurants impossibly hidden in the cliff side caves.
Old Port and Cable Car
The Port of Skala, affectionately known as the Old Port, welcomes cruise ships from across the world and is situated at the foot of Fira. The Old Port itself provides more than adequate entertainment with bars and restaurants, however it is the journey between Fira and the Old Port which provides the most excitement – choose from the spectacular Austrian built cable car, a traditional ride on a mule or a hearty walk up the mountain side where you can take in the spectacular views of the Aegean sea and the nearby islands.
Museums
The Santorini Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Prehistoric Fira both provide a vivid and interesting educational experience highlighting both Fira and Santorini’s rich history, particularly the volcanic eruption of c.1650BC. The White Orthodox Cathedral may also be of interest.
Dining
Fira is home to some of Santorini’s best restaurants and tavernas serving traditional Greek dishes as well as contemporary European cuisine. Dining experiences are enhanced through beautiful atmospheric surroundings where Greek salads, dolmades and souvlaki can all be washed down with a glass of one of Santorini’s locally produced wines.
Beaches
As a cliff top resort Fira does not host a beach however it is only a short distance across to the East side of Santorini where glorious beaches await.
Daytrips
Boat tours to the nearby Nea Kameni volcano include knowledgeable local guides and a visit to the hot springs. Other towns on Santorini such as Imerovigli, Monolithos and Kamari are all easily accessible by local bus.
