Skala Holidays – A relaxed and sunny family paradise
Skala is undoubtedly the best popular resort on Kefalonia with a superb beach right on its doorstep. A great option for a family or package holiday, the long sandy strand offers watersports and is lined with a variety of places to stay and eat to suit all budgets. The village centre, just a couple of minutes’ walk uphill, has yet more options.
There is even the site of a Roman Villa with some fine mosaics on the edge of the village but you will spend most of your time lounging on the long beach, where a little walk soon gets you away from the crowds. For a change of scene, the beach at Katelios and a number of quiet coves on the coastal road to Poros are not far away.
When to go to Skala
Skala can be visited any time, even during the quite mild winters, but hardly any places stay open outside of the mid-April to October tourist season. Try to avoid the peak summer season of late July to late August, when both prices and temperatures soar. Easter is a memorable time to visit, while the sea stays warm through September and into October and is ideal for swimming.
The weather in Skala
Skala boasts a typically sunny Mediterranean climate, with daytime temperatures climbing to 35ºC in July and August and often touching 30ºC anytime from April to October. Mercifully, the hottest months are alleviated by the brisk Maestro winds. Night time readings vary between 15–25ºC during the summer and rarely drop below 8ºC, even in midwinter.
The Ionian Islands traditionally get a good deal more rain than most of the Greek Islands, especially during the winter months, though occasional showers can occur even in high summer. However, with as many as 13 hours sunshine daily, you are guaranteed to get a tan.
Getting the best deal to Skala
You should not have any problems finding good deals on accommodation, even at relatively short notice, except during the peak season of late July to late August. Skala has a number of large beachfront hotels, with a range of smaller hotels, apartments and rooms available in and around the resort, many of which give great discounts in the quieter months.
You will find the best flight deals direct to Kefalonia outside the UK school holidays but during the winter you will have to go via Athens. Look for our current best deals and last-minute holidays below.
Airport and transport need to know
Kefalonia airport (EFL) has no bus service and a taxi costs around €12 (£9.50) to Argostoli, from where there are several buses (€4/£3.20) daily to Skala. A taxi direct from the airport to Skala costs around €40 (£32).
Renting a car is wise if you want to see much of the island. You can reserve a vehicle at Kefalonia airport online with one of the multi-national rental agencies from around €25 (£20), depending on the exact season. At less busy times, you can get better deals from local agencies such as CBR (www.cbr-rentacar.com).
