Stalis Holidays - A firm family favourite
Situated between Hersonissos and Malia on the north coast of Crete, Stalis has quickly grown from a seaside hamlet hideaway into a buzzing cosmopolitan holiday resort boasting one of the best beaches on the island. The 4-mile stretch of golden sand and shallow waters provide a bucket and spade haven for young children, while those looking for neon nightlife can hop on a bus to Malia or Hersonissos, or take a barefoot bar hop between the beach bars, taverns and seafront discos. With a beautiful beach sloping into aquamarine waters, watersports galore and a huge choice of friendly tavernas, it’s easy to see why Stalis holidays have become so popular.
When to go
If your aim is to top up the tan while taking in the scenic surroundings or lounging on the beach, anytime from late May through to the end of September is an ideal time for holidays in Stalis. The peak season months of July and August are when the temperatures are at their highest, but if you can hold off until September, you’ll find the climate just as fantastic, plus the sea will be even warmer and the flights and hotel rates a little lower. Leave it any longer and there is a slight chance of rain in October.
The weather in Stalis
Expect long hot summers in Stalis, where the sun beams down almost constantly from May through September. Rising from an average daytime temp of 22C in May, in the height of summer this rises to 28/29C, although the mercury can sometimes hit the 40s in August but this is usually accompanied by a refreshing sea breeze. Although there are a growing number of winter visitors, from December to February the temperatures rarely rise about 15C in the daytime, dropping to a chilly 8C at night time.
Getting the best deal
To find the best deals on Stalis holidays, shop around for flights from regional airports like Newcastle and Bristol instead of the main UK hubs, and try to avoid the peak summer school holiday period when accommodation rates are at their highest. If school term time does dictate when you can get away, look out for last minute holiday specials online. Don’t forget to also check out our offers below or visit our own late offer deals.
Airport and transport need to know
There are plenty of direct flights from the UK to Heraklion (HER) all year round, with most choice between the months of June and September. Stalis lies around 40 minutes drive from the airport, and a transfer will cost in the region of €50 by taxi. A cheap and easy alternative is to hop on one of the public buses to Malia, which leaves every 15 minutes from a stop close to the arrivals hall (every 30 minutes at night). The bus makes one stop in Stalis and will cost around €4 per passenger. For more detailed bus information visit KTEL. If you’re happy to drive yourself, several of the major rental agencies such as Hertz and Avis have offices in the arrivals hall, along with local car rental companies such as Megalonissos.
The best beaches in Stalis
Stalis beach is considered one of the best on the whole of the island. This 4-mile swathe of golden sand stretches all the way from Stalis to its more boisterous neighbour, Malia. While families tend to stick to the shallow waters and generally calmer Stalis end of the beach, Malia attracts the younger see-and-be-seen crowd, lured by the nearby nightlife, expanse of watersports and sculptured bronzed bods pumping the iron at Malia’s beach gym. Several other superb beaches are within easy reach of Stalis including the secluded coves of Hersonissos.
Best Beach for lazing on a sun lounger
You needn’t travel far to find a perfect beach for that all-important holiday duty - lounging about in the sun. The stunning sands of Stalis have everything you could possibly need for a spectacularly relaxing day at the seaside, including sunbeds, parasols, showers, changing rooms and a great selection of watering holes and lunch venues.
Best Beach for activities
Just along the coast, Malia, Crete’s most famous resort, boasts a beach that caters for everybody - especially those who like a little seaside excitement. This wide sandy beach offers all the watersports facilities you’d expect for such a popular beach, plus a few services that you wouldn’t, including massages on the sand and even a beach gym!
Best Beach for complete isolation
During summer, excursion boats run daily to the small island of Dia, 12 miles north of Heraklion. Here you’ll find sandy solitude at a number of small beaches that slip into the turquoise waters. St. George’s Beach is where the boat usually moors, but head west towards a small blue-domed chapel and you’ll come across two tiny but seductively secluded sandy coves.
