Beaches
Matala beach is beautiful much loved sand and pebble beach set in a cove surrounded by small cliffs and beach caves. This is the place to soak in the sun during the day and spot some underwater ancient ruins while snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. Nearby beaches such as Red Sand, Komos and Kokkinos Pirgi all retain an unspoilt relaxed atmosphere.

One of the best ways to view the coastline of Crete is from the deck of a boat. There are boat trips from Matala that stop off at deserted beaches and points of interest such as Agio Farango, Vathi and Kali Limenes. Relax on board and then stop off for a spot of swimming and snorkelling in the warm, emerald sea waters.

Matala nightlife includes numerous cafes, restaurants, tavernas and even a few nightclubs. The restaurants and tavernas by the beach serve the freshest seafood options. There is no better way to end the day than sipping some cool Cretan organic wine while watching the sun set over the Bay of Messara.
