Loutro Weather

Loutro is a quiet and picturesque resort on the south-west coast of Crete, in the Sfakia region of the island. The village experiences a typically-Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, and being located in the south, sees slightly higher temperatures and drier weather than those in the north.

 

Thanks to Crete's southerly position in the Mediterranean, Loutro, like all of the island's resorts, enjoys a longer-than-average tourist season that runs from April to October. Spring sees characteristically warm weather, with average daytime highs of 20C and 9 hours of sunshine, and is an ideal time for exploring the region, and embarking on scenic walks and hikes, both along the coast or through the countryside inland. There can be a little rain at this time, but in general, the weather is warm, dry and comfortable. May remains pleasant, with rising temperatures of 23C, and by June, Loutro is seeing highs of 27C, and up to 12 hours of sunshine each day. Peak summer months of July and August experience very hot weather, with soaring temperatures of 29C and as much as 13 hours of sun, and the beaches can become very busy at this time. There is increased humidity, and although there are a few cooling breezes, Loutro is not affected by the strong 'meltemi' winds of the north, so the weather seems much hotter than in other resorts. Evening temperatures are lovely and warm, around 21C, and ideal for leisurely meals and drinks in the village.            

 

September remains hot and sunny, with highs of 27C, and by October, the season is beginning to wind down, dropping to 24C, but still seeing 8 hours of sunshine. This is also a popular time for walks and hikes, although the weather can be a little changeable, with increased rainfall. Temperatures in the winter continue to be mild, just dipping to 15C in the coolest month of January.
