Kolimbari Things to Do

Beaches
The local beach is a mix of sand and shingle, and this fairly undeveloped stretch is good for both peaceful sunbathing and safe swimming. There are plenty of other quiet coves along the rocky shoreline of the north-west coast to discover from Kolimbari, too.

Walking & Hiking
Western Crete boasts some dramatic scenery and untouched terrain, ideal for avid walkers and hikers, with paths to follow from the village, either along the coast or inland through farmland and olive groves.

Countryside
Cycling is another great way to explore the region, and there is horse-riding available in stables nearby. Nature-lovers can enjoy scenic trails discovering the local flora and fauna, and the area is popular with bird-watchers.

Monastery
The Greek-Orthodox monastery of Gonia, now used as a cemetery, is located in the village. Dating back to the 13th century, the monastery houses post-Byzantine relics and treasures and has great views out over the coast.

Boat Trips
Boat trips depart from the harbour in Kolimbari, and take passengers out on fishing trips and along the coast to Diktinna and Nopigia.

Dining
There are many local restaurants and cosy tavernas in and around the town, with this charming fishing port still a working village, with rich agricultural produce such as citrus, olives and honey featuring on the menus, along with the fresh catch of the day.

Day Trips
Lying 23km east of the village, the town of Chania is a must-see, boasting a charming city centre full of narrow cobbled streets and Venetian architecture, as well as its historic harbour. There is an excellent choice for a change of pace, with its cosmopolitan shops, and vibrant restaurants and bars. Other day trips include the town of Rethymnon, the Minoan Palace at Knossos, the beach at Elafonisi and the village of Paleochora on the south coast.
