Agios Nikolaos Things to Do

The resort has several sandy beaches to choose from, including Almiros, Kitriplatia and Ammoudi, which offer sun beds and umbrellas, and convenient beachfront snack bars. For quieter sunbathing, head to one of the small coves and inlets along the coast, some only accessible by boat.

 

A good selection of water sports, including jet skiing, banana boat rides, scuba-diving, windsurfing, paragliding, canoeing and sailing.

 

Many hotels have swimming pools and tennis courts, as well as gyms, and facilities for volleyball, basketball and football, with golf just 15km away.

 

Walking, cycling and horse-riding are all excellent ways of exploring Aghios Nikolaos and the surrounding areas, and offer a change from the beach, with tracks and paths through the countryside to follow.

 

Regular boats depart from the harbor and take visitors out along the coast, stopping at many of the hidden coves and tiny inlets, as well as to the island of Spinalonga and Kolokitha Beach.

 

The main attraction of the town is the famous 'bottomless' Lake Voulismeni, which connects to the harbour and is filled with brightly-coloured boats, and surrounded by open-air tavernas and cafes - a scenic and relaxing spot for a drink or meal. Other sights to see include the town's church, the Archaeological Museum and the Folk Museum. 

 

There's plenty of places to buy gifts and souvenirs, and a weekly market in town, whilst the village of Kritsa, just 8km away, is well-known for it's locally-made traditional goods, such as embroidery and ceramics. Other good souvenirs include honey, olive oil and natural sponges.

 

As well as the boat trips, there are plenty of other options for exploring the region, with Heraklion, Rethymnon, Chania and Elounda within reach, via the local buses or hire car. The Caribbean-like beach of Via is on the eastern tip of the island, and Samaria Gorge in the south is a possible day trip.
