Agios Nikolaos is a busy lively harbour town sitting on the western end of the scenic Gulf of Mirabello, backed by olive groves and rocky mountains. The resort has long been popular with a cosmopolitan crowd, making this one of the most developed and best-known Crete resorts. Agios Nikolaos is quite a big town on the north-east coast of Crete, 6 miles south of the  popular resort of  Elounda and 40 miles south-east of Heraklion airport. Holidays here are not for those looking for peace and quiet, though the town is not as busy as it once was. For a full-on party try famous Malia along the coast. Agios Nikolaos tends to attract couples who enjoy a lively resort with plenty of shops, cafes, bars, tavernas and nightlife into the early hours. The town is still a working port and has a busy, picturesque and cosmopolitan harbour which tends to be the focus of Agios Nikolaos nightlife with many lively bars and clubs and a huge choice of eating options many of which are by the sea or the waters of the lake. The most famous feature of Agios Nikolaos is its deep Voulismeni lake in the centre of the town and connected to the sea by a canal.

Agios Nikolaos beach is complemented by the many fabulous beaches in this part of Crete, many with the EU blue flag awarded for clean water. You can get away from the Agios Nikolaos tourist scene by finding quiet coves on the coast and heading inland. The immediate coastline is rocky with beaches of sand and pebbles. Amoudara beach is a popular choice and an impressive beach can be found 8 miles along the coast at Kalo Horio. Agios Nikolaos attracts water sport enthusiasts with water-skiing, windsurfing and sailing available along with an excellent swimming pool and facilities for tennis, basketball, volleyball and horse riding.

Visit the pretty Byzantine chapel for great views of Mirabello bay and an exceptional archaeological museum. Fishing boats leave from the harbour to visit the famous island of Spinalonga with its Venetian fortress, and the resort of Elounda. Other excursions while on holiday in Agios Nikolaos are to Knossos Palace, Heraklion, traditional villages inland, the fascinating historic towns of Rethymnon and Chania, the splendid beach at Vai and the fishing village of Sitia. Agios Nikolaos has regular buses to Elounda, other destinations in Crete and ferry connections with the Greek mainland.
