The remarkable Haute Ville
Bonifacio is a fascinating town on the southern tip of Corsica, normally accessed from Figari airport. The undoubted highlight of Bonifacio is the famous Haute Ville: a striking ensemble of ancient houses, steep narrow lanes, churches and medieval battlements, spectacularly set on the white cliffs of a long narrow limestone peninsula, and topped by a 9th century citadel. The entire old town has a marked Genoese influence and holidays here enjoy a distinctly Italian atmosphere to this day. The unique setting affords superb views of the islands of Lavezzi, Caballo and Sardinia. To get the best views of the old town your holiday must include a trip out to sea.

Buzzing summer resort
The stunning location and attractions inevitably draw the crowds. Consider a low-season holiday to enjoy Bonifacio at its best. Having said that, holidays in peak summer enjoy a buzzing atmosphere and plenty of stylish nightlife. Aside from the Haute Ville, Bonifacio features a superb natural harbour with its port and fashionable marina. Holidays in Bonifacio have a reputation for lively boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Those looking for more glamour should head to stylish Porto Vecchio.

Explore superb Corsica beaches
The closest beaches to Bonifacio are small coves to the south and east like Pianterella Beach and Sperone Beach. For a quieter beach close by try Calalonga Beach. All holidays should include a trip to outstanding Rondinara Beach and the superb beaches around Porto Vecchio and Solenzara. Diving holidays in Bonifacio have an excellent reputation and centre on the Reserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio. Also on offer are superb sailing, watersports and first-class golf facilities. As always in Corsica, there are wonderful opportunities for walking, cycling, pony trekking and canyoning, particularly in the splendid Alta Rocca and Bavella Mountains.

Weather in Bonifacio

Bonifacio weather is seen by many as at its best in spring and autumn. In spring, the weather is mild, with temperatures around 18C to 21C. May and June are a beautiful time to visit, with the island of Corsica ablaze with wild flowers of purple, yellow and white blossom. This is a great time to go walking, but up in the mountains the Bonifacio weather can get quite cool. Many people believe that late June is an excellent time to visit Bonifacio, when the weather brings lovely long evenings and a sun that doesn't dip beyond the horizon until 9.30pm. After the tourist season, in September, Bonifacio is pleasant, too, making it ideal fortouring and walking. The weather in Bonifacio in September is lower than August but still very hot, with the sea particularly warm.
