Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica, is situated on the southwest coast, and lies in a beautiful bay surrounded by wooded hills. Ajaccio would suit those looking for a slightly more upmarket trip, with a distinctly French flavour, and offers a wonderful combination of relaxing and exploring. The town is just 7km from Ajaccio international airport, and is home to a large number of hotels varying in size and price. Self-catering holidays are very popular, with many private villas and apartments in the town and scattered in the hillside. There are numerous white sandy beaches around the Bay of Ajaccio, perfect for swimming and sunbathing, with many offering watersports such as windsurfing and scuba-diving. Further round the bay lies the town of Porticcio, with a gently shelving beach, perfect for children, and watersports such as water-skiing, pedaloes, jet-skiing and kayaking. Walking holidays in Ajaccio are extremely popular, as the region boasts a huge amount of trails and hikes through the scenic countryside and hills, and along the coastline.

The lively streets of the old town are perfect for exploring and offer visitors a chance to stroll along the squares and boulevards and choose from the many vibrant bars and cafes that line the town. Restaurants serve delicious Corsican and Mediterranean specialities, and the bustling daily market is a must, especially for those on a self-catering holiday. The charming port at Ajaccio is often full of luxury yachts, sail-boats and cruisers in high season, and many boat-trips can be taken from the town. Take a boat-trip to the Iles Sanguinaires with their stunning red rocks and rare birds and plants, make the train journey from Ajaccio to Bastia and Calvi, or take a coach trip to the beautiful spots of Bonidacio and Sartene. Culture lovers can explore the museums and sites whilst on holiday in Ajaccio, visiting the Musee Fesch with its impressive art collection and the cathedral where Napoleon was born.

Weather in Ajaccio

Weather in Ajaccio is comfortable throughout the year. Summer temperatures from June to September are at 21C - 27C. The months of May and June are the most attractive and welcome a large number of visitors in the area. Ajaccio is of interest to those who like sunbathing, snorkelling and swimming in the summer season. Average sea temperatures between the months of May to August are 24C. Ajaccio does have the advantage of light sea breezes which cools things down a little, whilst in the summer season the heat is not unbearable.
