Close to Tulum is Playa del Carmen, a fast-growing holiday centre, and the port which carries visitors out to the snorkelling and diving haven of Cozumel island. Playa del Carmen is a great place for shopping and evening entertainment, and is believed to offer the best nightlife along the Mayan Riviera. After a day at the Tulum ruins, enjoy a cold beer or margarita and check out the vast array of restaurants serving local Mexican and international food. Late-night bars often host live music from reggae and salsa to the traditional Mariachis.

The main tourist season runs from November to April in Tulum. December and January see high temperatures of 29C and between 50mm - 70mm of rainfall each month. This period sees the most comfortable level of humidity, and the high temperatures are accompanied by 6 - 7 hours of sun. Temperatures hover around 29C - 30C in the winter, and the warm waters of the Caribbean reach 26C. March sees a gradual increase in temperature and daily sunshine hours, and by April the days reach 33C and the humidity is very high, with the sun shining for 8 hours each day.
