Cozumel Holidays
Cozumel Holidays
Cozumel, Mexicos’ largest island, is a world-renowned holiday destination, famous for its fantastic beaches and first-class diving, set amongst a location of stunning natural beauty. With its Caribbean climate and cosmopolitan hotels and restaurants, Cozumel is very popular with international visitors, and offers both modern facilities and an insight into the island's rich Mayan heritage. Located off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula in South-east Mexico, Cozumel lies just 18 km from mainland Mexico, and is reached from Cancun airport by either a short plane transfer, or an hour's ferry ride. Although much of Cozumel is undeveloped, with most of the island covered with dense jungle, a haven for exotic flora and fauna, such as lizards, deer, parrots and macaws, the west coast is filled with hotels and resorts, and is a favourite cruise-ship stop-off.
Great Value for Money
Holidays in Cozumel can be quite cheap and great value for money. They are usually centred around the beaches – there are many on the island, with fine white sands, and numerous coral reefs lie off the coast. The best beaches can be found in the south-west of the island, such as Playa Corona and Playa Palancar, and this sheltered side with its’ famous stretch of coral reef running along it, a protected area called the Parque Marino de Cozumel, is the best for snorkelling and diving. Large beaches such as Play San Francisco and Playa Sol prove popular with the cruise ships that pass through, and all along the coast are plenty of ‘beach clubs’, serving food and drink, and offering sunbeds and loungers to those who need a base for sunbathing and swimming. A popular spot for families with children is the Parque Chankanaab, which offers safe conditions with its’ shallow lagoon and sheltered childrens’ pool. In the north, long beaches such as Playa Santa Pilar and Playa San Juan are lined with large resorts, and the area is known for its’ clear lagoons. The eastern coast of Cozumel, facing the Caribbean, is much more wild and unspoilt, and home to some wind-swept deserted beaches.
Diving Holidays
Cozumel is one of the top 5 dive destinations in the world, and has been ever since Jacques Cousteau discovered the fantastic coral reefs around the island and filmed his documentaries here in the 1960’s. As well as diving, snorkelling is extremely popular, as are the extensive watersports available in Cozumel, along with sailing and deep-sea fishing. Cozumel has an incredibly rich culture, and the islands’ Mayan temples such as San Gervasio and Castillo Real are a must-see. The town of San Miguel on Cozumel offers a good choice of international restaurants, and extensive shopping along its’ busy streets.
