Festivals and fiestas
Festivals in the Dominican Republic are a regular occurrence and there are many held throughout the year. Puerto Plato is host to three of the best; the Fiesta Patronala on July 5th takes in dancing and drinking along the Malecon whereas the Carnival in February features a parade with hundreds of locals dressed in full regalia. The most famous festival is the Merengue held in October, featuring parties on Long Beach and along the Malecon.
Baseball
Baseball in the Dominican Republic is regarded almost as a national religion and if you are a fan of the sport you will not be disappointed. You can view the best young players in the world before they hit the big time at professional stadiums such as Campo Las Palmas near Juan Dolio.
Whale Watching
Over 4000 hump-backed whales swim across the Atlantic to the Dominican Republic each winter and there are numerous tour operators who give excursions to see the whales. Aquatic Adventures sail from Puerto Plato and their excursions actually give you the chance to swim and snorkel around the whales.
Deep-Sea Fishing
Deep-sea fishing in Dominican Republic is a very popular pastime and there are many tour operators based in the excellent marinas and docks at Puerto Plata and Bayahibe. The spectacular reef between Monte Cristi and Luperon affords some tremendous fishing; catches of the day include tuna, blue marlin and sea bass.
Wind and water surfing
The resort of Cabarete is the international windsurfing capital of the Americas and holds two major world competitions. Wind and water surfing in Dominican Republic is catered for by dozens of different clubs and experts. Kite surfing is an exhilarating sport and it is easy for beginners to soon be skating along the waves at Playa Cabarete and Playa Encuentra.
Beaches
The beaches in Dominican Republic are some of the most spectacular in the world. You are never far from soft, golden sands lapped by warm turquoise waters. The beaches at Punta Rucia and Playa Ensenata near Luperon are idyllic with bleached sands and blue sky as far as the eye can see. The clear warm waters are perfect for snorkeling and swimming and a chance to visit the beaches should not be missed.
