Sosua holidays, situated on the Amber Coast of the Dominican Republic, is a friendly and popular beach resort with a distinctly local flavour. Sosua boasts an interesting history - it was founded by German Jewish refugees fleeing the Second World War, who eventually settled there and set up a dairy community in the area, an industry which is still very much in evidence today. Tourism really took off in the 1970s, and Sosua has now developed into a bustling and unpretentious resort, known for offering good value for money.

The sheltered beach at Sosua is located on a crescent shaped bay, with a kilometer long stretch of golden sand, and offers plenty of shade and shallow warm waters, making it ideal for family holidays. Backing the beach is a pedestrian promenade, which connects the two distinct areas of Sosua - El Batey, the more developed tourist area, and Los Charamicos, home to the locals - and either side of the main beach at Sosua are smaller beaches running along the coast. The choice of accommodation in Sosua remains varied - ranging from small pensions to luxury all-inclusive hotels. There are a huge amount of shops in Sosua, mainly tourist-oriented, and numerous stalls selling local handicrafts throughout the resort. The streets of Sosua are full of restaurants, with the tourist area in El Batey home to many European-style open-air cafes and bars, and Los Charamicos offering family-run establishments serving up delicious traditional Dominican food. Nightlife in Sosua is lively, with some great local bars, and some of the best discos on the North coast can be found in the resort.

A Sosua holiday offers lots of water-sports activities - ranging from water-skiing and jet-skiing, to scuba-diving and sailing - and inland, visitors can try horse-riding and mountain-biking. The port city of Puerto Plata is nearby, and a cable-car ride up Mount Isabel de Torres is highly recommended. Just 2km west of Sosua is the largest waterpark in the Caribbean, the Columbus Aquaparque, home to many different water slides and pools, and offering a great family day out.

Sosua does have its wet season that lasts from October through January but even the short lived rainfall will not dampen the high temperatures.
