Hassle free Malaga

Malaga, Spain

If the Costa Del Sol is on your list of holiday destinations for 2012, then Malaga most definitely should be too. Our Malaga holidays expert and local resident, George Prior, sets out his hassle free guide to planning an affordable, low-stress, unforgettable holiday on Spain’s sunshine coast.

A decade ago, Malaga, the Costa del Sol’s capital, was a place that holidaymakers landed in, or whizzed through, to get to Nerja, Torremolinos and Marbella. But that has all changed. The elegant, bohemian-spirited port city, whose skyline is dominated by a Phoenician-built fortress and a 16th century cathedral, now holds its own as a ‘destination’.

The palm-lined plazas, marble-paved boulevards, and windy narrow lanes of Picasso’s birthplace are packed full of Andalusian character and yet they aren’t over-run with tourists. However, the rise in the number of cruise ships scheduled to visit Malaga in 2012 means many more are set to discover the city’s bustling tapas bars, world-class galleries and fascinating history.

Hassle free Geneva

Read on for our hassle-free guide to Geneva. Our expert Kerry Christiani gives you the low down on planning a trip to the city that you’ll never forget.

Sitting smugly at the foot of the French Alps and on the impeccable shores of its namesake lake, Geneva is good-looking, affluent and more eclectic than you might expect. No wonder Geneva always scores top marks in quality of living surveys. This chic city at Switzerland’s westernmost tip has got so much going for it: history, culture, boutique shopping, lakefront parks and intimate bistros.

Critics argue that it lacks urban edge and that hotels are geared more towards UN bureaucrats than style-conscious city-breakers, but they’re just nit-picking. Glide past the Jet d’Eau in a mouette (seagull) boat, roam the higgledy-piggledy Old Town and do brunch at the Bain des Pâquis pier, and you’ll soon fall for its charms. Holidays here don’t have to cost a mint, either. Keep reading for tips on how you can make the most of your franc in Switzerland’s slickest city.

Hassle free Venice

If you’re planning to visit Venice in 2012, read on for top tips and advice on how to enjoy a hassle free holiday, written by our Venice holidays expert, Mary Novakovich.

Venice’s magic never fades, even when it seems the whole world descends on its enchanting islands of canals. There’s no escaping the fact that the city throngs with tourists. But few people can resist a ride under the Rialto Bridge and past the Renaissance palaces on the Grand Canal.

A stroll through Piazza San Marco past the opulent Basilica and Doge’s Palace is a must, even if you don’t join the vast queues to explore the interiors.

Its 200-odd canals are the city’s roads, winding through the many islands that make up the Venetian lagoon. No matter how many times you’ve seen Venice on screen, its breathtaking architecture has to be seen to be believed.

The Best of the Best of Prague

Prague Food and Drink

Prague is the perfect destination for a wintery city break. But where should you stay and where are the best places to eat? Our Prague expert, Mark Baker, lives there and has done the research. So sit back and relax as he tells you all about the best of the best of Prague.

The quality of Prague’s hotels and restaurants has improved dramatically in recent years, but a little planning and foresight can go a long way. Accommodation runs the gamut from modest hostels and pensions to corporate chains and lavishly restored Baroque and Renaissance townhouses. The latter often have period touches like wood-beamed ceilings that lend an unforgettable aspect. Prague is a long way from being a “foodie” destination, but if you know where to look you can dine out well indeed. Watch for tourist traps, especially around Old Town Square.

I couldn’t live without . . . essential kit for a holiday in the Costa Blanca

What are the things you always take on your holiday with you?

We asked experts and our customers what they couldn’t live without on holiday. Costa Blanca holidays expert Derek Workman explains what he always takes with him on his travels.

The idea of being a ‘flashpacker’, someone who travels with all the latest technology, frankly terrifies me. If I’m on holiday I don’t want to sit for hours in a cafe staring at a laptop exchanging emails when I could actually be experiencing somewhere or simply reading a book. And I carry enough ‘kit’ when I’m travelling for my work. But there are a few things that also go into the holiday bag.
