The Best of the Best of the Costa Brava

Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava

Suzanne Wales gives you the low-down on the absolute best of beach holidays in the Costa Brava – We do the research on the review sites so you know exactly where to go and what to do on your holiday.

If it’s endless stretches of golden sand you are after, the Costa Brava may not be your scene. But if literally hundreds of lapis-coloured coves sound appealing, then step right along to the ‘craggy coast’. Many regular travellers to the Costa Brava prefer sunbathing at its calas, and they have a point – the rocks keep the water crystal clear and their reduced size keeps the bucket and spaders well at bay. (Instead, they head to resorts such as Roses and Lloret de Mar, which are built around long beaches.)

Smaller beaches are a feature of the villages, as the sand facilitates bringing traditional fishing boats to shore. But intrepid travellers tend to bypass those and follow the coastal roads and paths to their pebbly piece of paradise. You’ll need a car to explore the region in depth, though you could do fair chunks by bus (Sarfa Buses) if you base yourself in a major destination such as Palamós or Palafrugell and are prepared to walk.

Hassle free Rome

Ancient Rome

Copyright Erica Firpo

Planning a city break in Rome? Read on for a hassle free guide to planning a Roman holiday from our travel expert and Roma native, Erica Firpo.

A weekend in Rome can be the perfect getaway. The historic centre is a pedestrian’s dream as all major monuments are within walking distance, and span the nearly three-thousand year history of the city where every corner has something to offer.

It’s important to keep your eyes open in Rome. Rome has layers of living history. Senators, generals, emperors, popes and dictators have all left their mark on its urban design – rendering Rome a hodgepodge of visual artefacts—from ancient bridges and monuments to churches and even 21st century architecture. Since “all roads lead to Rome”, it’s safe to assume that everything radiates out from the historic centre so pick a monument as a reference to begin exploring the Eternal City.

The Best of the Best of Krakow – things to do and places to stay

Main Square, Krakow

Our Krakow holidays expert, Mark Baker, has researched the best things to do and places to stay that Krakow has to offer. He has the low down on Poland’s historical second city, so sit back and read on for the best of the best Krakow.

Krakow is Poland’s highly deserving entry into the beauty pageant of elegant Central European cities that include Prague, Budapest and Vienna. The former seat of Polish kings offers something for everyone, including a perfectly preserved medieval market square, a commanding hilltop castle, world-class museums, and reputedly the highest concentration of bars and clubs in Europe.

Krakow is divided into two main sightseeing areas: the Old Town, with its impressive market square, and the former Jewish ghetto of Kazimierz, about 2 kilometres away. The Royal Castle, Wawel, stands between the two. The walk takes about 20 minutes; alternatively hop a tram.

Best of Malaga’s hotels and restaurants

Interior patio of Picasso Museum, Malaga

Make the most of your holiday in Malaga. Our Malaga holidays expert and local resident, George Prior, has researched the forums and the blogs to give you a list of the very best of the city’s places to eat and stay. Sit back, relax and read on for the best of the best of Malaga.

Since the opening of the Picasso Museum in 2003 Malaga has undergone a massive urban gentrification programme and reinvented itself as a major cultural and artistic hub. To cater for the flock of ‘culture vultures’ which now visits the city every year, there are several new, top-notch luxury hotels as well as plenty of more budget-conscious options.

Meanwhile, Malaga has a proud gastronomic heritage but the city’s renaissance has widened the choice considerably in the last few years. Like anywhere, it’s best to eat where the locals do and avoid those places that cater solely for tourists – they’re springing-up everywhere as restaurateurs scramble to meet the needs of the 750,000 cruise passengers coming to the city this year.

The Best of the Best of Bodrum’s beaches

Amphitheatre in Bodrum, Turkey

Our Turkey holidays expert, Marc Dubin, has researched the best beaches that the Bodrum region has to offer. He has the low down on where to do your snorkelling, your windsurfing and your sunbathing on this beautiful peninsula on the south west of Turkey’s Aegean coast.

Although Bodrum town has some ancient monuments, hamams and a superb medieval-castle with museum, its beach – on easterly Kumbahçe bay – is merely functional.

Serious beaches around Bodrum are in the coves that speckle the entire coast of the peninsula extending west of town. These are surprisingly accessible.  Every resort has frequent access from Bodrum’s otogar (bus station) by minibus (cars can be a liability in summer, what with limited parking space and fees charged). But a cruise on a gulet (traditional wood-hulled schooner) is probably the most relaxing way to arrive at south-shore beaches.

So where are the real treasures? Read on for enlightenment.

I couldn’t live without a Metro map in Paris

Paris Metro sign

Our Paris holidays expert, Mary Novakovich, shares the wisdom of her experience and tells us all about what she couldn’t live without on a break in Paris.

You wouldn’t think of travelling to a city without a decent street map, and Paris is no exception. But to discover the best of Paris you really should use the Métro, which can look a bit scary if you’re not used to complicated underground networks. So it helps enormously to have a Métro map that’s easy to follow and takes the fear out of ending up by mistake somewhere on the furthest fringes of the city.

If Turkey is on your list of holiday destinations for 2012, then Antalya should be too. Our Turkey holidays expert, Lara Dunston, shares her hassle free guide to planning an affordable, low-stress, unforgettable holiday on the Turkish Riviera.

Abundant sunshine, long stretches of sand, and turquoise sea, combined with plenty of direct flights and countless resorts, has made Antalya Turkey’s most popular summer holiday destination. The fact that good beaches are on the doorstep of a lively city boasting one of the country’s most atmospheric old towns – complete with Roman walls, Ottoman-era architecture, traffic-free lanes, and a splendid harbour dotted with seafood restaurants – adds to Antalya’s allure. If that weren’t enough, the city has great shopping and eating, a dramatic mountain backdrop, and day-trips to do if you can drag yourself away from the beach.
