Hassle Free Crete

If you are looking to go on holiday to Greece this year, check out our Hassle Free guide to Crete created by travel expert Marc Dubin. Megalónisos, the “Great Island”, is the Greek nickname for Crete, and it’s big indeed – even with a hire car, you’ll just scratch the surface of the place in the duration of a typical one or two-week holiday.

There’s definitely something for all tastes here: culture buffs will delight in the Turko-Venetian old towns of Haniá and Réthymno, foodies will appreciate how Crete has been at the forefront of nouvelle and “slow” Greek culinary revivals, the most jaded beachcomber will discover many sandy bays, while the more uproariously minded will find ample nightlife in resorts like Mália, Hersónisos and Ágios Nikólaos.

Hassle free Kefalonia

Our expert travel writer, Kerry Christiani, has created a hassle free guide to Kefalonia to make your holiday an enjoyable one!

As anyone who has ever swooned over the scenery in the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin knows, Kefalonia is gorgeous – and it looks even better in real life. On this vast, mountainous Ionian Island, pine-cloaked heights and wild cliffs plunge down to white-sand beaches and coves scattered like horseshoes in a flint-blue sea. But the island has not let its cinematic beauty and brush with fame go to its head.

Kefalonia has successfully sidestepped the worst excesses of tourism and resorts remain low rise and low-key – whether you opt for sandy southern bays like Lassi, Lourdas and Skala, or ruggedly romantic northern coves near Fiskardo and Assos. Days unfold here in relaxed Greek fashion, with lazy beach mornings and drawn-out taverna lunches. Siga, siga (slowly, slowly), as the islanders would say.

The Best of the Best of the Costa Brava

Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava

Suzanne Wales gives you the low-down on the absolute best of beach holidays in the Costa Brava – We do the research on the review sites so you know exactly where to go and what to do on your holiday.

If it’s endless stretches of golden sand you are after, the Costa Brava may not be your scene. But if literally hundreds of lapis-coloured coves sound appealing, then step right along to the ‘craggy coast’. Many regular travellers to the Costa Brava prefer sunbathing at its calas, and they have a point – the rocks keep the water crystal clear and their reduced size keeps the bucket and spaders well at bay. (Instead, they head to resorts such as Roses and Lloret de Mar, which are built around long beaches.)

Smaller beaches are a feature of the villages, as the sand facilitates bringing traditional fishing boats to shore. But intrepid travellers tend to bypass those and follow the coastal roads and paths to their pebbly piece of paradise. You’ll need a car to explore the region in depth, though you could do fair chunks by bus (Sarfa Buses) if you base yourself in a major destination such as Palamós or Palafrugell and are prepared to walk.

Hassle Free Costa Brava

S’Alguer, Costa Brava

Take a read of our Hassle free guide to the Costa Brava if you’re planning a holiday in Spain. Travel expert, Suzanne Wales, gives you all the information you need to know to make the most of your trip in the Costa Brava.

When General Franco was looking for a moneyspinner, he turned his attention to the craggy coastline sweeping northwards of Barcelona to Pyrenees. In doing so he created – as the story goes – Spain’s first package tourism destination.

The Costa Brava’s alluring ensemble of beaches and calas (coves) and salty maritime villages were no secret to Barceloneses of course, and it had its Côte d’Azur moment in the 1930s when the likes of Ava Gardner and Orson Welles flocked here. Franco’s vision may have been responsible for formulaic high-rise resorts such as Lloret de Mar, but in destinations such as Cadaqués, Dalí’s old stomping ground, or the upmarket enclaves of Tamariu or Llafranc, it barely held sway.

Hassle free Marbella

Istan, Marbella

Marbella, widely viewed as Spain’s equivalent of St. Tropez, has been a holiday destination of choice for A-listers and royalty since the 1950s. In more recent years it has developed a ‘where oligarch meets wag’ reputation. Travel expert George Prior’s hassle free guide to help you plan your trip.

The super yachts, designer stores and chic restaurants, undoubtedly give it an air of high-octane glamour and ostentatious luxury, yet there is another side to Marbella: the historic quarter. The casco historico, as it’s known in Spanish, is a maze of quintessentially Andalusian narrow cobbled streets, white-washed buildings, bright red geraniums cascading from window boxes, orange-tree lined squares, 16th century churches, and craft boutiques. As Piers Morgan put it in his ITV1 documentary: “It’s a classic contradiction: a tale of two cities.”

Looking to go on holiday to Menorca this year? Read on for a hassle free guide from our travel expert Kerry Christiani. Serene and unspoiled, this Balearic Island has not sold its soul to mass tourism and is all the lovelier for it.

From Cala Galdana’s horseshoe bay to the startling turquoise sea of pine-brushed Cala Macarella, the island’s 99 beaches are its most obvious asset, but Menorca also has a few surprises up its sleeve.

For a true taste of the island’s coast and culture, get behind the wheel to explore the hinterland’s patchwork of meadows, olive groves and orchards, fringed by dry-stone walls; kayak to tucked-away inlets and lagoons along the rugged north coast, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve; and ramble to megalithic Bronze Age sites that piece together the jigsaw of Menorca’s prehistoric past.
