Hassle Free Crete

If you are looking to go on holiday to Greece this year, check out our Hassle Free guide to Crete created by travel expert Marc Dubin. Megalónisos, the “Great Island”, is the Greek nickname for Crete, and it’s big indeed – even with a hire car, you’ll just scratch the surface of the place in the duration of a typical one or two-week holiday.

There’s definitely something for all tastes here: culture buffs will delight in the Turko-Venetian old towns of Haniá and Réthymno, foodies will appreciate how Crete has been at the forefront of nouvelle and “slow” Greek culinary revivals, the most jaded beachcomber will discover many sandy bays, while the more uproariously minded will find ample nightlife in resorts like Mália, Hersónisos and Ágios Nikólaos.

Kos is an enduringly popular, exceptionally fertile Greek island with a range of resort hotels and a balmy climate. Nearly 30 beaches, varying from smallish pebbles to fine sand, stipple the island’s perimeter. For many, the best line the south shore facing Níssyros islet, especially between the airport and Kamári, all accessed by tracks of varying length and steepness – you’ll need a hire car or jeep.

The Best of the Best of Bodrum’s beaches

Amphitheatre in Bodrum, Turkey

Our Turkey holidays expert, Marc Dubin, has researched the best beaches that the Bodrum region has to offer. He has the low down on where to do your snorkelling, your windsurfing and your sunbathing on this beautiful peninsula on the south west of Turkey’s Aegean coast.

Although Bodrum town has some ancient monuments, hamams and a superb medieval-castle with museum, its beach – on easterly Kumbahçe bay – is merely functional.

Serious beaches around Bodrum are in the coves that speckle the entire coast of the peninsula extending west of town. These are surprisingly accessible.  Every resort has frequent access from Bodrum’s otogar (bus station) by minibus (cars can be a liability in summer, what with limited parking space and fees charged). But a cruise on a gulet (traditional wood-hulled schooner) is probably the most relaxing way to arrive at south-shore beaches.

So where are the real treasures? Read on for enlightenment.

Hassle free Bodrum

Bodrum, Turkey

If Turkey is on your list of destinations to research for 2012, then the stunning Bodrum peninsula should be too. Our Turkey holidays expert, Marc Dubin, shares his hassle free guide to planning an affordable, low-stress, unforgettable holiday on this gorgeous peninsula on the south western Aegean coast.

White-washed, bougainvillea-decked Bodrum, the ancient Halikarnassos, is Turkey’s longest established and most versatile seaside resort. From humble beginnings as a sponge-diver’s anchorage and place of internal exile, it has evolved into a cosmopolitan and lively Aegean town. Cruises along the coast ply from the busy marina, while the crusader-built castle houses one of the world’s best underwater archaeology museums. The town is gateway to a sizeable peninsula, speckled with twenty villages, mostly coastal. Enduringly popular with Brits are the party-cove of Gümbet, Ortakent with its long beach, the market centre of Turgutreis facing terrific sunsets, and charming, upmarket Gümüşlük, the ancient Myndos.

Planning a trip to Larnaca and nearby resorts this year? Our Cyprus holidays expert, Marc Dubin, gives you the insider information on planning, booking and enjoying a hassle free holiday you’ll never forget.

Most visitors to Larnaca, the smallest of Cyprus’s resorts, tend to be passing through because they’ve just arrived at Cyprus’s busiest airport. Most Brits are en route to Agía Nápa’s fluffy sands and nightlife or Limassol’s beach strip and luxurious self-contained resort hotels. Whatever your reason for travelling through Larnaca, there’s plenty to please the sun-hungry traveller.

Best of Larnaca’s places to eat and stay

Lemesos Old Town

Our Cyprus holidays’ expert, Marc Dubin, has scoured the web for the inside information on the restaurants and accommodation that Larnaca and the surrounding region has to offer. So sit back, relax and read on – we’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to.

Many online forums and content websites are remarkably sparse on where to stay and eat in Larnaca and immediate environs. Postings can be obsolete, with topics often closed to comment, and even formerly respected sites like Time Out Cyprus have not been properly updated in years, with vanished restaurants listed. So it’s very much buyer beware – and read on for tried-and-tested recommendations. One thing that does emerge consistently is the limited choice of accommodation and dining in Larnaca and its adjacent beach strips – heading slightly inland and northwest to charming foothill villages significantly expands your options if you have transport.

Best of the best of Crete – beaches, walks and sights

Crete’s beaches and sites are famous. But which are the best? Our Crete holidays expert, Marc Dubin, has done the research online so you don’t have to.

There’s surprisingly little on web forums about Crete, considering how many visitors the island gets. Many sites are old or so curated that user opinions are expressed only indirectly. However, there are some good tips to be gleaned out there, especially for beaches, but also for hikes and cultural attractions, with generally sound judgements. For off-the-beaten track highlights, you will need a car (inexpensive to hire off-season), as bus connections are only good along the north coast and down to select south-coast resorts.

Hassle free Rhodes

Rhodes Tsampika beach

Planning a trip to Rhodes? Our Greek holiday expert, Marc Dubin, gives you the insider information on planning, booking and enjoying a hassle free holiday you’ll never forget.

Rhodes, the island of the ancient sun-god Helios, is keen to emphasise that association: understandably so, with an average of over 300 sunny days annually. But increasingly Rhodes is coming into its own as a cultural destination and not just a place for beach holidays. The medieval walled old town of Rhodes, a UNESCO Heritage Site, and the perfect sugar-cube village of Líndos on the east coast are indisputably must-sees. But frescoed country chapels, crumbling rural castles and one of Greece’s best art museums also attract art-and-architecture buffs. And for the energetic, various watersports await, including great windsurfing.

The Best of The Best Of Rhodes’ beaches and sights

The absolute best of beach holidays in Europe and beyond – we review the reviews so you know exactly where to go and what to do on your holiday to Rhodes.

Rhodes is big enough that even in peak season you can find a secluded cove, or section of a larger beach, to yourself. Local beaches and sites don’t get much of a look-in on travel sites, but there seems to be agreement that the southeast (Mediterranean) facing coast is a better bet for flat water and abundant sand than the northwest-facing one.  There’s also little curiosity or initiative in getting beyond the beaten track in terms of attractions, but Rhodes has so much more to offer than the standard double-act of the old town and Líndos.
