Spa Town
The town of Smarjeske Toplice is located at an elevation of 169 metres in a beautiful nature setting, surrounded by thick forests and lush meadows. It is most famous for being one of Slovenia's fifteen renowned spa towns, one of only three in the Dolenjska region. The town boasts an outdoor pool made wholly out of wood as well as advanced top-class wellness and health facilities. Hikers are spoilt for choice, though if heading into the more thickly forested areas it's advisable to stick to the established trails – the local fauna includes brown bear as well as wolves, lynx, boar and red deer. Famous landmarks are the Veliki Rog peak (at 1099m elevation) which offers a viewing tower, and the Queen of Rog fir tree – a magnificent sight at five hundred years of age and stretching fifty metres in height.

Kolpa Valley
The Kolpa Valley – named for the 120m long river which winds through it – is less isolated, forming Slovenia's border with Croatia. This area of the country is ideal for driving and cycling expeditions and offers plenty of great picnic spots. Guided hikes are also available. The river itself is popular among adventure sport enthusiasts with kayaking and rafting among the activities on offer, and during the summer bathers and swimmers flock to it.

Dolenjska
The capital of the Dolenjska region is the famous historical city of Novo Mesto, a centrepiece of the region's renowned wine industry. The city is rich in culture and architecture and visitors can also explore its vineyards and wine cellars, where local wines like the light red Cvivek can be sampled. Novo Mesto is just a short trip away from Smarjeske Toplice by bus, bike or car.
