Enjoyable historic city on the sparkling Adriatic
Dubrovnik is a beautifully restored historic city in the south of Croatia, 13 miles north of the beach resort of Cavtat and enjoying a spectacular setting at the foot of mountains overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The undoubted highlight of Dubrovnik is the pedestrianised walled Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with churches, palaces, cobbled lanes, fine tall houses, attractive squares and fountains. Walking the walls of the fortified Old Town and exploring an enjoyable mix of bars, cafes, shops and markets is all part of its charm. The city also has an interesting cultural life, with museums, galleries and summer concerts. Nightlife here centres on the animated cafe and bar scene in the city and attractive small family restaurants in the Old Town.
Tiny coves and offshore islands
The beaches here are a series of pebbly coves and rocky outcrops. The beautifully clean water attracts scuba divers. Beaches on the offshore islands are popular with naturists. It also attracts sailing enthusiasts, thanks to the superb coastline, the islands and the marina. Other day trips could include island boat trips and water taxis to beach resorts along the coast.
Outstanding island excursions
There are plenty of worthwhile excursions including a trip to the island of Mljet with its national park and monastery, and the medieval town on the island of Korcula. You could also take a trip to the delightful beach resort of Cavtat or travel into the lesser known interior for excellent walking, fishing, canoeing and rafting.
The Dubrovnik Riviera has become the new holiday hotspot thanks to nearly seven months of constant warm sunshine per year. The temperatures can reach over the 30C mark during the hottest summer months of June, July and August with the sun beating down for 12 hours per day. The long dry summer season lasts from April to October with any rainfall sticking mainly to November and December. Winters will be cooler, but you can still expect warm temperatures of around 10C to 15C with around five hours of sunshine per day.
