St Vlas Holidays
Beach, mountains and affordable family fun
St Vlas (or Sveti Vlas) is a beautiful coastal village on Bulgaria’s Black Sea seafront, just 5 km north of Sunny Beach - the largest holiday resort in the country.
St Vlas is loved for its idyllic position at the foot of the Balkan Mountain range, and its unspoilt sandy beaches. There are three beaches to choose from at St Vlas. The longest, central beach offers the most space and tranquillity, while to the south is a small beach housing camping facilities, and to the north is a beach featuring a new marina.
Rapidly growing in popularity
St Vlas has been developing quickly in recent years to keep pace with demand for affordable holidays for Bulgarians, and neighbouring Europeans. Families enjoy the prospect of a beach holiday with forest, mountains and dramatic scenery on the doorstep.
The town has become known in Bulgaria for its brand new yacht marina - built alongside the old fishing port - and St Vlas now attracts professional yachters and enthusiastic holiday-makers who want to hire boats for the day. In just a few decades of private enterprise, St Vlas has become home to many new holiday apartments, smart new hotels, holiday villas and restaurants, spreading out from the small historic centre.Visitors can also enjoy the beach amenities and lively nightlife at nearby Sunny Beach, 5 km away. St Vlas is certainly quieter though, and would suit families with children or couples keen to avoid too much noise and distraction on their holiday.
Public buses, mini buses and taxis run regularly from St Vlas to Sunny Beach, the old town of Nessebar and the city of Bourgas, and water transport also connects the area well. The nearest international airport is at Bourgas, which is a 30 minute drive away.
A rich history to explore
St Vlas has a fascinating history dating back to ancient Thracian tribes. During the 14th Century the town became known as Sveti Vlas, after the patron saint of cattle growers and merchants. During the Ottoman rule the village was named Manastir, referring to five monasteries in the area, but the name Sveti Vlas was restored in 1886, after the reunification of Bulgaria.
Weather in St Vlas
St Vlas lies at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, just a few kilometers from the popular holiday resort of Sunny Beach. The town enjoys typically Mediterranean weather, with St Vlas seeing hot dry summers and an average of 300 days of sunshine each year. The unique combination of mountain and sea air helps to create a healthy and curative climate, ideal for those with respiratory problems.
