Bourgas Holidays
Gateway to Black Sea Beach resorts
Bourgas is an attractive, enjoyable city and is the gateway to the sunny, south-east coast of Bulgaria. Tourists on their way to Black Sea beach resorts like Elenite, Nessebar, Duni, Sunny Beach and Sozopol will probably begin their holidays in Bourgas.
Little-known beach
Bourgas offers a far better insight into everyday life in Bulgaria than the purpose-built beach resorts to either side. Bourgas also features pleasant boulevards, interesting markets and friendly people. Bourgas holidays offer a beach that rarely sees foreign visitors. Bourgas Beach is something of a secret, and is just a few minutes from the city. Bourgas is a lively university city, known for its museums and festivals that include folk, classical music, jazz, opera and latin dance. Bourgas also offers a superior choice of shops and restaurants serving authentic Bulgarian cuisine. Prices are very cheap by British standards. Accommodation in Bourgas ranges from cheap guesthouses to luxury 5 star hotels.
Likeable city base for touring
With the best transport in the region, Bourgas holidays are ideally placed for exploring the Black Sea coast and the region’s nature reserves. Birdwatchers in Bourgas should head for the lakes that surround the city. Lakes at Atanasovo, Mandra and Pomorie attract migrating birds, pelicans and a wide range of sea and marsh birds. There are good walking trails in the Otmanli nature park. Other worthwhile Bourgas excursions include Pomorie Town and the island of St Anastasia. Attractions within Bourgas include historic churches, the cathedral and the sea park that flanks part of the coast. Even if you are heading for the well-known beach resorts you should consider spending some of time in Bourgas.
Bourgas weather
Bourgas enjoys a long summer with temperatures of 22°C in May and 21°C in October being just a little higher than the northern Black Sea resorts. In the height of summer the winds coming in from the northeast help keep the weather comfortable as temperatures hover around 30°C in July and the humidity reaches its highest level in August. Indeed, summer in Bourgas can be idyllic. Towards the end of May the sea temperature reaches 20°C and stays a very pleasant 22°C-25°C from June until September. The average air temperature is still a warm 21°C in October and it can be a very agreeable time to visit the city and the charming fishing ports and countryside nearby, but some of the museums and attractions do close in September. The area is geared towards summer tourism although, with between eight and eleven hours of sunshine each day from the beginning of May until the end of September, Bourgas does enjoy a lot of summer.
