Austria is a country that boasts four distinct seasons with typically cold winters and sunny summers with temperatures as high as 30C. The high mountainous peaks in Austria will be snow covered throughout the year while the lowlands along the Danube Valley remain the driest area in Austria. As one of the most mountainous areas in Europe the Austrian climate will vary between the high peaks and low valleys. Most areas of Austria will become cold and snow covered during the winter months making Austria one of the world’s best skiing holiday destinations.

 

The climate in Austria can be broken down by distinct geographical locations. The Alpine regions including Tyrol and Salzburg exhibits warm and dry autumn and spring months with cold winters, although high altitude areas can be sunny even during the winter. The Danube Valley and the Vienna Basin will generally be hot and dry during the summer months with very cold winters due to cold winds blowing in from Eastern Europe. The southern area of Styria and Carinthia has a more Mediterranean climate and boasts sunnier, warmer weather than the rest of the country. Rainfall in Austria is distributed evenly throughout the year with most months receiving an average 13 rainy days.

 

There really is no off season in Austria and holidaymakers tend to choose when to visit by the activities they enjoy. Summer months can be spent lounging on lakeside beaches in the 25C plus sunshine. Spring and autumn in Austria are particularly beautiful seasons and temperatures will be warm with around six hours of sunshine per day. Winter in Austria means snow, and the skiing season will usually begin in November. Temperatures during the winter months in Austria can plummet to -6C especially during the evenings.
