Airport history

The Newcastle Aero Club was founded back in 1925 on an airfield in Cramlington just north of Newcastle. When the present site of Newcastle airport opened in Woolsington a decade later, the Aero Club relocated with it. The original Art Deco building has long gone and today the airport is home to Britain’s oldest flying club which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2010. A huge £27 million terminal extension doubled the size of the check-in hall in 2010 and 2012 is the due date for another £3.2m extension, designed to create extra space for security search accommodation and make the whole check in and out process faster.
