Holidays from Exeter Airport

Holidays from Exeter Airport

Exeter airport

Exeter was one of many cities to build an aerodrome in the late 1930s, when public aviation first started to take off (pun intended!). It sits just outside Clyst Honiton in East Devon, four miles east of Exeter. The airport celebrated its Diamond Anniversary in 1998 and in 1999 the Princess Royal opened its new Arrivals building. A fabulous new £950,000 Departure Lounge was opened in 2003, a comfortable, welcoming place with space for 400 travellers. In 2011 it handled more than 710,000 passengers, and qualifies as an international airport.

Airport information

Exeter airport has all the facilities you’d expect from a compact facility, providing a café, a WH Smith, a currency exchange and cash machines. The departure lounge ATM offers Euros if you need them. The cafe is on the main concourse, with indoor and outdoor seating, and offers a good choice of sandwiches and snacks, a children’s menu and great coffee. You can buy baby equipment and food on-site in WH Smiths, warm baby bottles in the Café and use the baby changing facilities in the toilets.

Airport directions

By bus

Catch the Stagecoach 56, 56A or 56B bus to and from Exeter St. Davids train station, the bus station and Exmouth. Here’s a link to the timetable.

There isn’t a station at the airport, but there are three nearby. Exeter St. Davids is five miles away, with services to London Paddington, Plymouth, Cornwall, North and South Devon. Exeter Central is 5 miles away, with services to London Waterloo, Exeter and North & South Devon. Call at Tiverton Parkway, 12 miles away, for trains to Paddington, or head for Digby & Sowton station for Exeter, North Devon and South Devon services.

By car

If you use SatNav, the airport’s post code is EX5 2BD. It’s just five miles from Exeter city centre and five minutes from the M5, just off the A30.

Flybe, Thomson, Thomas Cook, Skybus, Air Malta and Air Transat all fly from Exeter airport, between them providing a wide reach across the UK and Europe.

Airport car parking

Exeter International’s official on-site car parks have been awarded the Park Mark, which means their facilities have met the police’s stringent risk assessment requirements. Car park 1 is for pick-ups, drop offs and short stays, just 40 metres from the terminal. There’s long term car parking at car park 2, just 60m from the terminal.  Car Park 3 is also long stay, 180m from the terminal on the B3184. And car park 4 is long stay too, 750m or so from the terminal with a shuttle bus service on demand.

Airport hotels

There are no hotels at the airport but it’s very close to Exeter, which has plenty of places to stay for every budget from posh to basic. There are also modern and historic hotels, guest houses and B&Bs in nearby villages, around West Clyst, Birchy Barton, Exminster, Silverton, Matford, Woodbury and Stoke Hill.
