General Things To Do Weather

Yaiza - Lanzarote’s southern region is holiday heaven
Yaiza is the inland town that serves Lanzarote's intriguing, sun-bathed southern region, also known as Yaiza. The attractive town itself is noted for its picture-postcard beauty, and has won several awards for cleanliness. It is 20 km from the island’s airport and just a few minutes drive to the peaceful beaches at Papagayo, on the southern tip of Lanzarote’s coast. The area boasts hotel and apartment accommodation to suit all budgets, and offers visitors a fantastic choice of sights to see and beaches to enjoy.

Yaiza - Timanfaya National Park on the doorstep
From Yaiza visitors can explore the eerie, volcanic landscape for which Lanzarote is famous. Holidays on this most easterly of the Canaries promise family fun on the beach and great food and drink, but also the chance to learn how the ravages of nature formed this island’s unique interior. The activity of over 300 volcanoes, which have been dormant for hundreds of years, have shaped how Lanzarote looks today. Timanfaya National Park, which is a few kilometres from Yaiza, covers one third of Lanzarote. It is the result of lava flowing from volcanoes over 250 years ago. Trips to the spectacular park are easy to arrange, and sometimes include volcanic cave exploration and camel rides.

Canary Island Culture
For some Canary Island culture, visit Teguise, 20 km further north of Yaiza. It’s a picturesque old town, which was once the island’s capital. Here you’ll find historic churches and convents, ornate aristocratic houses, and a castle constructed on the summit of a volcanic cone.
For the best beaches, it’s hard to beat the peacefulness and calm of Playa Blanca, Playa del Papagayo and others, found around the southern tip of Lanzarote, while if you head west from Yaiza, El Golfo about 7 km away, can offer excellent seafood restaurants, and stunning sunsets.

Yaiza - old Lanzarote close to beaches
In Yaiza’s attractive central square you’ll find a pretty 17th century church, Iglesia Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, which has been lovingly restored and contains fine  religious carving and paintwork. Yaiza also has a cultural centre, interesting shops for browsing, and art galleries. Yaiza would also be an excellent base for wine-lovers hoping to sample Lanzarote’s finest, as the area is home to several noted vineyards.
