Vathy Things to Do
The Port of Vathy
Vathy is a good base from which to explore Ithaca. It is the largest settlement on Ithaca and as such all the usual amenities such as banks and shops can be found here. With an appealing waterfront and its romantic bars and tavernas, Vathy really comes alive at night – you can even let your hair down at the local disco or just watch the world go by.
Beaches
Although there is no beach at Vathy, Ithaca more than makes up for this with the spectacular horseshoe bay at Kioni which can be reached by road across the mountains. Kioni has four beaches, all with stunning views across the turquoise sea which is ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Motor boat hire is also available to reach small secluded coves with trees running down to the waters edges. A busier beach can be found by taking the ferry from Vathy to Kefalonia with its lovely white sands. Here there are a variety of water sports such as windsurfing and diving.
Out & About
From Vathy you will find ferries going to Kefalonia, Corfu, mainland Greece and even Italy if the mood takes you. Public transport is limited but there are plenty of taxis or hire cars to take you to places such as the beautiful fishing village of Frikes. No holiday in Vathy would be complete without a visit to the picturesque village of Perachori, set high up the mountain, which has spectacular views over Vathy itself and it is here that the local wine is produced.
Walking
There are many trails around Ithaca and whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a hike, the scenery is guaranteed to be spectacular. Ithaca is of course steeped in mythology and legend has it, the home of Odysseus. Explore the Cave of Nymphs or the ruins of the Castle of Odysseus. In all the villages you are assured a warm welcome at the local tavernas and a glass or two of Ouzo or the local wine will make the journey back even more pleasurable!
