Varkala, located just 50km north of Triruvananthapuram city, is a quiet, calm oasis which is fast establishing itself one of the main tourist areas in Kerala. The waters at Varkala beach are rich in minerals, and the spring water which emerges from the cliff face, spilling into the sea, is considered to have therapeutic properties, able to heal and cure all manner of ailments. Varkala has a number of Ayurvedic massage centres, and is fast becoming an important health resort in Kerala, with a good choice of accommodation available, from budget inns and motels to luxury resort-style hotels.

The quiet town of Varkala holds special importance for Hindus and is still an important place of pilgrimage. The waters of Varkala are considered holy, and a dip in them is believed to cleanse the body and soul of impurities (hence the beaches’ name ‘Papanasam’ – destroyer of sin), and the town is home to the 2,000 year old Janardhana Swami Temple, and the ashramam the Sivagiri Mutt, final resting place of the Hindu philosopher, Sree Narayana Guru.
