The waters of Varkala are considered holy, and a dip in them is believed to cleanse the body and soul of impurities (hence the beaches’ name ‘Papanasam’ – destroyer of sin), and the town is home to the 2,000 year old Janardhana Swami Temple, and the ashramam the Sivagiri Mutt, final resting place of the Hindu philosopher, Sree Narayana Guru.
