Weather in Valletta - In the heart of the Mediterranean
Valletta, on the north east coast of Malta, is an all-year destination. The island’s position in the heart of the Mediterranean, south of Sicily and little over 150 miles north of Africa means that there is plenty of sun throughout the year. Even in the depths of winter there’s still an average of 5 hours sunshine each day, while visitors in July can expect to enjoy 12 hours of sun with not enough rain to register. January is the coldest month with average temperatures reaching 14C, which may not be hot enough to lie on the nearby beaches, but it’s pleasant enough for getting to know this historic city.
Valletta Weather – Year-round sunshine and clear, warm sea
In July and August Valletta does get very hot, and September is still humid, but breezes help keep things bearable. In high summer average temperatures reach 29C - and can go much higher when winds blow up from Africa - while the sea temperature is not far behind at 26C. The best time to visit is down to personal choice. Spring and autumn will suit those who would like to explore the island’s history as well as its beaches. The countryside blossoms in spring and by late April temperatures will have risen above 20C and will reach 26C in June. And of course beaches are less crowded outside high summer and there should be some bargains to be had. There is more chance of rain in autumn but it doesn’t tend to last too long, and at 23C the October sea temperature is actually warmer than in June.
Weather in Valletta – Hot, dry summers followed by mild winters
There may be abrupt, heavy showers and even hailstones in winter but generally the temperatures stay well above freezing and the weather is almost like summer in the UK. You will need a wetsuit for diving, though, as the sea temperature falls to 15C in January and takes a while to warm up again. On the plus side this does mean that there are more fish closer to the shore as they seek the shallower, warmer water. Winter is also a good time for other activities such as golf, horse riding and even walking. Valletta is an ideal destination at any time, being a superb base for discovering the island and a city for a winter holiday.
