Turkey is set to experience a huge increase in tourism in 2007 with 21.4 million foreign tourists – boosting a firm revival from just 2006 which saw the lowest number of visitors to Turkey since 1999. An 8% rise in the number of international visitors is predicted, with the first impressions being related by tour operators this year proving promising. Oktay Varlier, Chairman of the Tourism Investors Foundation told the Anatolia news agency that all signs pointed to a positive future for Turkey tourism – especially in 2007.It is claimed that of central to the lack of previous tourists were two main factors, the price-quality balance and bird flu. Oktay Varlier stated that "The most dangerous factor for Turkish tourism is a reduction in tourist satisfaction. Turkey in recent years has been able to capture the delicate balance between price and quality. But the events of 2006 disrupted this balance." The ministry of culture and tourism for Turkey has made a considerable increase in its publicity budget, which it is reported will focus on highlighting Turkey's apparent edge over other rival holiday destinations. Turkey will also start to focus on destinations within Turkey, rather than simply promoting the country as a whole. It is hoped that this will directly reach targeted tourism customers, focusing on certain regions.
